NEWBURGH, N.Y.-The SUNY College at Old Westbury
baseball team split a doubleheader with Mount Saint Mary on
Saturday at Delano-Hitch Stadium in Newburgh, winning game one, 5-2
and dropping game two, 8-3. Old Westbury moves to 10-6
overall and 6-1 in Skyline Conference play while Mount Saint Mary
stands at 15-2 and 4-2.
Panthers at the plate (Game 1): Sophomore
Emmanuel Mateo (Brooklyn, N.Y.) went 3-for-4 with three doubles and
scored two runs and drove in one to pace Old Westbury
offensively. Junior Albert Bevacqua (Staten Island,
N.Y.) and freshman Ronnie Petito (Cape Coral, FL) each went
2-for-4, while Bevacqua scored one run and Petito singled home
Mateo in the fifth frame to give the Panthers a 5-2
advantage. Junior Joseph Manzella (North Babylon, N.Y.)
clubbed a pair of singles to hit 2-for-5 with an RBI single in the
fifth inning that scored senior Ben Farmer (Three Mile Bay, N.Y.)
from second. Junior Rob Moschetto (Massapequa, N.Y.)
went 1-for-5 with a double and stole home after reaching on a
fielders choice in the fifth inning.
Blue Knights at the plate (Game 1): The Blue
Knights received the biggest boost from Louis Peisel (1-for-4, SB,
2 K's), who singled home Brian Visconti (0-for-3, 2 K's) and Mike
Umphlett (2-for-3,3B, BB) in the fourth inning.
Panthers on the mound (Game 1): Junior Robert Whitenack (North Massapequa, N.Y.) captured his fourth victory of
the season after firing seven strikeouts in eight innings on the
mound while allowing two runs on three hits and three walks. Senior
David Collado (Copiague, N.Y.) shut the door on the Blue Knights in
the ninth inning, going two thirds of an inning with two strikeouts
to earn his first save.
Blue Knights on the mound (Game 1): Starter
Michael Redmond suffered the loss for Mount Saint Mary.
Redmond allowed eight hits and five runs, walked three and struck
out three in six innings on the hill. Ben Shortslef (2.0 IP,
2 K's, 1 H) and Greg Diamond (1 IP, 2 H, BB) came in for relief of
Redmond, and teamed up to pitch three scoreless innings.
Game Notes (Game 1): Old Westbury outslugged
Mount Saint Mary in hitting, 11-4, including a 5-1 advantage in
extra base hits. On the base path, Old Westbury stole three
bases and left nine on while Mount Saint Mary had one theft and
stranded seven. On the mound, Old Westbury tallied 10
strikeouts and five walks compared to Mount Saint Mary, who had
five punch outs and four free passes.
Panthers at the plate (Game 2): Old Westbury
was led on the offensive end by freshman Alexander Villanueva
(Brooklyn, N.Y.), who hit 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run
scored. Sophomores Emmanuel Mateo and Anthony Fernandez
(Bethpage, N.Y.) each scored and stole one base. Albert Bevacqua's 15-game on base streak ended after going 0-for-3.
Blue Knights at the plate (Game 2): Rich DeRosa
(1-for-3) swatted a 2-run big fly in the fourth inning off junior
Dan Fordyce (Brentwood, N.Y.) to score Brian McNoble (1-for-1, 3B,
3 R's). Brian Visconti led Mount Saint Mary by hitting
1-for-4 with a triple off sophomore reliever Jorge Hiraldo
(Brooklyn, N.Y.) in the sixth inning drive home Mike Umphlett
(2-for-3), John Conroy (1-for-1, 2 RBI) and Leandro Bautista.
Panthers on the mound (Game 2): Reliever
David Collado took the loss for the Panthers when he gave up four
runs on one hit in the sixth inning, going a third of an inning of
work in addition to walking two. Starter Dan Fordyce worked
five innings on the hill allowing three runs on four hits with
three strikeouts.
Blue Knights on the mound (Game 2): Dan McCren
earned the victory on the mound for Mount Saint Mary after
recording one strikeout and one walk in six innings thrown to go
along with three runs on six hits.
Game Notes (Game 2): Old Westbury held the
advantage in hits, 7-6, but were unable to outscore Mount Saint
Mary due to a 3-0 Blue Knight margin in extra base hits. On
the base path, Old Westbury stole four bases and left three on
while Mount Saint Mary had one stolen base and stranded four.
On the defensive front, Max Tecce committed the lone miscue for
Mount Saint Mary. On the mound, Old Westbury tallied three
strikeouts and three walks while Mount Saint Mary registered two
strikeouts and one free pass.
The Green and Ivory return to the diamond on Sunday, March
29th to battle Skyline Conference opponent, Farmingdale
State for a doubleheader in Old Westbury. First pitch of game
