OLD WESTBURY HOLDS OFF YESHIVA FOR 72-66 VICTORY

OLD WESTBURY, NY (www.oldwestburypanthers.com) – The SUNY College at Old Westbury men's basketball team received 29 points between senior Kristopher Afum (Bronx, NY) and junior Frantz Granjean (Brooklyn, NY) off the bench to lead the Panthers to a hard fought 72-66 Skyline Conference victory over the Yeshiva Maccabees Wednesday evening at the Clark Athletic Center. Old Westbury improves to 13-5 on the season and 11-2 in conference action while Yeshiva dips to 6-10 and 5-7, respectively. 

Old Westbury led 35-31 at halftime as Yeshiva used a 12-2 run over the final 5:58 to cut the deficit down. Old Westbury expanded the four point halftime lead to five after Frantz Granjean sank a pair of free-throws with 13 minutes left in the game. Yeshiva outscored Old Westbury 25-16 over the next 9:36 to take a 64-60 advantage with 3:24 on the clock. Afum scored six of Old Westbury's next 12 points as the Panthers held a 12-2 scoring advantage and forced three turnovers to close out the game. 

Afum scored 18 points (season-high) on 7-of-13 shooting to go with six boards (five offensive) and two steals in 19 minutes of action off the bench. Senior Bill Reese (Selma, AL) followed with 16 points (7-of-13 FG) and five rebounds while classmate Hakiem George (New York, NY) finished with 15 points, eight assists (zero turnovers), six rebounds and one steal. Frantz Granjean posted 11 points and 13 pull-downs to register his third double-double of the season, in addition to three swats and one steal in 32 minutes of court time off the bench. 

Senior Martin Leibovich (Buenos Aires, Argentina) led the way for Yeshiva with 18 points and grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds. Sophomore Chen Biron (Kfar Saba, Israel) chipped in with 10 points and four assists while sophomore Omer Haim (Rishan Lizion, Israel) finished with nine points, 11 assists and four rebounds. 

Old Westbury shot 43.9 percent from the floor, including 38.9 percent from three-point range. The Panthers also dished out 18 assists, blocked five shots and collected nine steals. Yeshiva connected on 48.1 percent from the field, including 40.9 percent from three-point territory. Old Westbury's defense forced 17 turnovers, leading to 13 points. Old Westbury held the 38-29 advantage in boards, including 17-7 off the offensive glass. Those 17 offensive rebounds for Old Westbury were turned into 15 second chance points.
