OLD WESTBURY, NY (www.oldwestburypanthers.com) – The SUNY College at Old Westbury women's basketball team connected on 16.7 percent from the field en route to a 65-38 Skyline Conference loss to the Mount Saint Mary Blue Knights on Saturday afternoon at the Clark Athletic Center. With the loss, Old Westbury's record went to 8-5 on the season and 3-3 in conference action, while Mount Saint Mary remained undefeated in conference action and improved its record to 7-0 and 10-3 overall.
After leading 9-6 early in the half, the Panthers trailed by double digits, 26-16 on a jumper by Shannon Sangster with 6:53 left in the first half. Mount Saint Mary out-scored Old Westbury 11-2 in the final 6:12 to take a 37-18 lead into the locker room.
The Panthers began the second half on a 4-0 run before Mount Saint Mary answered with 14 consecutive points, extending its lead to 51-22 on a layup by Charneic McCullough with 10:36 remaining in the second half. Old Westbury cut the deficit to 24 points on three separate occasions but each time Mount Saint Mary had an answer. The Blue Knights won by a final score of 65-38 and were led by Shannon Sangster with 16 points and 11 rebounds.
Krystina Agard (Queens, NY, August Martin) was one of three Panthers to register in the scoring column as she poured in a game-high 28 points on 16-of-17 shooting from the line to go along with nine rebounds and two steals to pace the squad. Brittany Jones followed with eight points and eight rebounds and Daniella Santos added two points and two steals. Katelin Kube grabbed nine rebounds and cleared six off the offensive glass and Chutney Burrowes recorded a game-high three steals off the bench.
Sangster finished 8-of-10 shooting from the field and had two blocked shots and two steals in 26 minutes of court time. Charneic McCullough and Natalie Garbie added 10 points each.
Mount Saint Mary shot a sizzling 50 percent from the field in the first half, connecting on 17-of-34 attempts and finished at 42.4 percent for the game (25-of-59). Old Westbury, who shot 21.4 percent in the first half, cooled things off in the second, shooting 12.5 percent and 16.7 percent for the game. Old Westbury shot 81.8 percent (18-of-22) from the line while Mount Saint Mary knocked down 63.2 percent (12-of-19). Both teams struggled from outside the arc as Mount Saint Mary netted 16.7 percent (3-of-18) and Old Westbury missed on 16 attempts. Mount Saint Mary held a 47-38 rebounding advantage, including 13-12 off the offensive boards. Old Westbury converted 19 Mount Saint Mary turnovers into 10 points while the Blue Knights had 19 points off 17 Panther miscues. Old Westbury held a 9-6 advantage in steals and had five blocked shots compared to Mount Saint Mary's seven.
