www.oldwestburypanthers.com) – The SUNY College at Old Westbury women's picked defeated Skyline Conference foe, St. Joseph's-L.I. Golden Eagles Wednesday evening in their home opener, 61-18, at the Clark Athletic Center. OW improves to 4-2 on the season and 3-1 in conference play while the Golden Eagles dip to 1-6 and 0-3, respectively.
Kim Weathers scored a game-high 17 points to go with eight rebound and six steals.
DeAndra Scott followed with 15 points (6-11 FG), four assists and four steals while
Brittany Jones added 13 points, five boards and four steals.
Deslyn Applewhaite chipped in with nine rebounds (four offensive), four assists and two steals and
Abigail Williams contributed seven rebounds.
Danielle Hamlin led St. Joseph's-L.I. with 13 points and Amanda Bender combined 11 points, 13 rebounds and 10 turnovers to notch a backwards triple-double. Nicole Reddiing helped out with seven points and 10 rebounds.
In the first half, St. Joseph's-L.I. jumped out to a 6-2 lead with 17 minutes remaining until OW went up by four points ((16-12) with 11:27 left on the first-half clock on a layup by
Kim Weathers. SJC-L.I. outscored OW 17-11 over the final 10:09 to take a 29-27 lead into the locker room at half-time.
DeAndra Scott led OW in the first-half with nine points and Danielle Hamlin's eight paced the Golden Eagles.
In the second-half, the Golden Eagles took control of the game early on but were unable to put OW away, going up by as many as six points on two separate occasions. Down six with 9:29 remaining, Old Westbury put together a 12-0 run (6 points by
Brittany Jones) to go up 51-45 at the 5:52 mark. St. Joseph's-L.I. countered with a 9-2 spurt capped by Amanda Bender's layup with 2:47 remaining to put the Golden Eagles up 54-53.
Kim Weathers scored five of OW's next eight points including a pair of free-throws with five seconds remaining. SJC-L.I.'s Laura Cohen missed a three-pointer at the buzzer that would have sent the game into overtime.
Overall, Old Westbury out-rebounded St. Joseph's-L.I., 42-38, including 15-5 off the offensive glass. OW also turned 34 turnovers by the Golden Eagles into 22 points. Old Westbury sot 30.6 percent from the field (22-72 FG) while St. Joseph's-L.I. hit on 40.7 percent (22-54 FG).
UNITED STATES MERCHANT MARINE ACADEMY MARINERS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury returns to the court on Thursday (Dec. 16), taking on the United States Merchant Marine Academy Marines in a non-conference road game in Kings Point, New York. Game time is set to tip at 7 p.m. from the James W. Liebertz Gymnasium.
