BASEBALL DROPS DOUBLE HEADER 15-12 (12 INN) AND 9-2 AGAINST FROSTBURG STATE

Panthers close out three game series outhitting Frostburg State 38-32l

DANVILLE, VA (www.oldwestburypanthers.com) – The SUNY College at Old Westbury baseball team allowed a three-run home run by Frostburg State's Matt Greene in the bottom of the 12th inning off Jorge Hiraldo that defeated the Panthers 15-12 in the first game of a doubleheader Sunday at Owen Fulton Field on the campus of Averett University. Frostburg State took game two as well by a 9-2 margin.

Old Westbury got on the board first with a three-run first as Fernando Lopez singled to center field to score Melvin Simmons and Albert Bevacqua. Josef Schaetzle scored the third run of the inning off an error by Frostburg State second basemen Matt Greene. Frostburg State responded in the bottom of the first with a double down the right field line by Joe Garrity that scored one followed by a Corey Carr single to center field that drove home Garrity and Matt Greene to knot the game at 3-3. The Bobcats took a 4-3 lead in the third inning as Joe Garrity scored from third off an error by Josef Schaetzle.

Old Westbury posted three more runs on four hits in the fourth to take a 6-4 lead. Melvin Simmons tripled to score Edwin Pena. Bevaqua stepped to the plate next and doubled home Simmons and scored on a passed ball two batters later. Frostburg State then grabbed the lead with a four run fifth inning and a three run sixth as the Bobcats got to Old Westbury reliever Ryan Jarvis, taking an 11-6 lead. Old Westbury came back with three runs in the eighth inning. Melvin Simmons scored on an error by third basemen Pat Sapp that moved Giovanni Jimenez to second and Albert Bevacqua at first. The very next batter Josef Schaetzle stroked a single to score Jimenez followed by a Fernando Lopez single to left field that sent Bevacqua home for the score.

After Frostburg State added one run to their total, Old Westbury tacked on three more runs in the top of the ninth to send the game into extra frames. Edwin Pena doubled to center field, scoring Malik Wylie and Ryan Blanco. Two batters later, Giovanni Jimenez delivered a double to center that scored Pena, which tied the game at 12-12. Jorge Hirado was called on for relief work in the ninth inning. Hiraldo retired his first eight batters (three strikeouts) faced and worked the ninth, tenth and eleventh innings without allowing a hit (one base runner). Hiraldo recorded the first out of the bottom of the twelfth and then hit a batter, allowed a single and gave the three run walk off homerun.

Starter Bobby Hugli worked three innings for Old Westbury, allowing four runs (three earned) on fivehits and one walk while striking out one. Ryan Jarvis was charged with seven runs (five earned) on four hits and five walks in three innings. William Campbell surrendered one run on two hits while toeing the rubber in the seventh and eighth inning. Hiraldo was pinned with the loss after tallying three strikeouts in 3.1 innings on the mound, giving up three runs on two hits and one walk.

Center fielder Giovanni Jimenez (2 SB, 2B) led Old Westbury at the plate going 4-of-7 with two stolen bases, one RBI and one run scored. Fernando Lopez went 3-for-6 with three RBI and Edwin Pena hit 3-for-7 with two RBI and two runs scored. Melvin Simmons (2-for-5, RBI, 2B, 3B) and Albert Bevacqua (2 RBI, 2B and 3BB) led all Panthers with three runs scored.

Greg Beachy improved to 2-0 with the win, going three innings of shutout baseball. Joe Garrity (3-for-4, 2 RBI) collected three hits and scored four runs while Timothy Sutcliffe went 2-for-4 with six RBI for Frostburg State.

In game two, Frostburg State took an early lead with a four run first inning (two earned) off freshman Abel Guerrero. Guerrero settled down over his next two innings, allowing one hit. Reliever Joshua Burgos surrendered three runs in the fourth inning, off which two were earned.

Old Westbury lit the scoreboard up in the sixth with a pair of runs. Fernando Lopez reached on a fielder choice with the bases loaded to drive in Giovanni Jimenez for the Panthers first run. Emmanuel Mateo reached on an error by shortstop Daniel Heatwole, which scored Albert Bevacqua to cut the deficit to 7-2. Frostburg State responded with two more runs in the bottom half of the sixth inning off James Huber.

Giovanni Jimenez and Joe Manzella each recorded a pair of singles while Steve Henriquez stole the lone base in the game. Kevin Briffa and Ranser Reyes combined for 1.1 innings of hitless ball while Andrew Salomon and Alexander Villanueva recorded the final two outs.

Frostburg State's Jordan Santak improved to 1-1 on the season with five innings of four hit baseball. Daniel Heatwole finished the game 4-for-4 (three doubles) with three RBI and three runs scored.
