BEVACQUA, JIMENEZ HOMER IN 13-2 ROUT OF LEHMAN

Albert Bevacqua and Giovanni Jimenez powered the offense while the pitching racked up 13 strikeouts. Panthers will face Farmingdale State on Saturday.

(www.oldwestburypanthers.com) – The SUNY College at Old Westbury baseball team exploded for 13 runs and 13 hits as the Panthers picked up their second win of the season with a 13-2 victory over the Lehman College Lightning (1-1) Thursday evening at South Field in Bronx, New York.

Old Westbury (2-6) had five players with two hits each. Albert Bevacqua went 2-for-5 with five RBI. He hit a grand-slam in the ninth inning to close out the scoring. Tom Benendetto went 2-for-4 with two RBI and Emmanuel Mateo doubled and scored one run in a 2-for-3 day at the plate. Steven Henriquez and Josef Schaetzle added two hits while Henriquez drove in one and scored one run. Giovanni Jimenez drew three walks and clubbed a two-run homer in the eighth inning. Anthony Fernandez stroked a two-run pinch hit double in the ninth inning to score Bladimir Toribio and Robert Moschetto.

Old Westbury used nine pitchers to hold down Lehman, combining for 13 strikeouts and surrendering one earned run on four hits and five walks. The offensive explosion made a winner of reliever Marvin Rosario (2-0). He pitched a perfect fifth inning and sat down two batters on strikes. Starter Bobby Hugli tossed two innings of one-hit baseball with two strikeouts. James Huber and Frank DiMaria worked the third and fourth innings, respectively, striking out three batters each. Ryan Jarvis struck out one in the sixth inning and William Campbell walked one and gave up one unearned run with one strikeout in the seventh inning. Kevin Briffa pitched a scoreless eighth, giving up two hits. Jorge Hiraldo was charged with one run on one hit and two walks with one strikeout while recording the first and second outs in the ninth before Alexander Villanueva was called on to record the final out.

The Panthers got on the board first with an RBI single to center field by Tom Benendetto to drive in Emmanuel Mateo. Old Westbury tacked on two more runs in the third as Melvin Simmons walked to lead off the inning and later scored on a fielder's choice and an error. Tom Benendetto delivered a single to score Josef Schaetzle, giving the Green and Ivory a 3-0 lead. Old Westbury struck again in the sixth when Edwin Pena hit a leadoff double and later scored as Albert Bevacqua singled.

Lehman lit up the scoreboard in the seventh inning when Albert Bevacqua committed an error that allowed Matthew Arvelo to reach and scored Jeremy Lopez from second. Arvelo was thrown out trying to advance to second by catcher Steven Henriquez.

Old Westbury responded in the eighth when Giovanni Jimenez drove in Steven Henriquez off a two-run big fly. The Panthers added seven more runs in the ninth. Steven Henriquez singled to right field to score Fernando Lopez. Anthony Fernandez followed with a two-run double. Three batters Albert Bevacqua drilled a grand slam to score Jason Kondra, Ronald Petito and Anthony Fernandez. Lehman scored their second run of the game off reliever Jorge Hiraldo in the ninth as Amadoernesto Guzman grounded out to shortstop Ronald Petito to score Jhon Comas Disla

Lehman collected just four hits and Jhon Comas Disla doubled for the lone extra base hit. He went 1-for-3 with one run scored and one walk.  Jason Caraballo earned the loss for Lehman, tossing 3.1 innings and allowing two earned runs off four hits and seven walks. Lehman pitchers combined to surrender 13 hits, 12 earned runs, 10 walks and eight strikeouts.
 
Old Westbury will head east on the Long Island Expressway for a double header to take on defending Skyline Conference champs, Farmingdale State College Rams on Sunday, March 21. Game one is scheduled for 12 p.m. at the Farmingdale State Baseball Stadium.
