BROOKLYN, NY (
www.oldwestburypanthers.com) – The SUNY College at Old Westbury baseball team earned their sixth consecutive win to go 6-0 for the week after disposing the NYU-Poly Fighting Blue Jays, 31-0 and 30-1, in a conference doubleheader on Sunday at Floyd Bennett Field in Brooklyn, New York. The pair of victories made Old Westbury 8-8 on the season and 6-2 in Skyline Conference play while NYU-Poly slipped to 3-8 and 3-7.
Four runs in the first inning, six run in the second, two runs in the fourth, one run in the fifth, nine runs in the sixth, two runs in the seventh, four in the eighth and three more in the ninth lead to Old Westbury's 31-0 game one victory.
Junior
Josef Schaetzle went 5-for-8 with five RBI and six runs scored as the Panthers plated 31 runs on 22 hits in game one. Eurus Turbi also drove in five runs and
Giovanni Jimenez and
Bladimir Toribio each had four RBI.
Melvin Simmons,
Giovanni Jimenez and
Edwin Pena each banged out three hits, combining 9-for17, 13 runs and seven RBI. Pena clubbed a two-run homer in the second to score Schaetzle, who reached base on a three-run double.
Albert Bevacqua,
Jason Kondra and
Anthony Fernandez each scored three runs apiece while Bevacqua and Fernandez each drove in two run. The Panthers scored in every inning except in the third, where they went down in order; one-two-three. The Panthers had six extra-base hits, while every starter had at least one hit and one run scored.
Carlos Ruiz and Jon Paul Anatra each doubled and went 2-for-4 at the plate to pace the NYU-Poly offense. Edward Melcer and David Wolfinger struck out twice.
Sophomore right-hander
Ryan Jarvis got the win, improving to 2-0 on the year. He allowed four hits in five innings of work, striking out three.
Kevin Briffa and
Ranser Reyes each logged in two innings on the hill, combining to sit down six on strikes with two hits.
Starter Jeremy Ray Silvia took the loss for NYU-Poly, allowing 10 runs (seven earned)on five hits and six walks in two inning. Reliever Waleed Eltrareb tossed seven innings, surrendering 21 runs (13 earned) on 17 hits and seven walks.
Once again, every starter recorded at least one hit and scored one run. The Panthers registered 30 runs on 25 hits including eight extra base hits in game two. Those season-high 25 hits surpassed the 22 hits used to score 31 runs in game one. Old Westbury scored four in the first inning, six in the second, five in the fourth, one in the fifth, six in the sixth inning and concluded with eight in the seventh. The third inning proved to be the lone scoreless inning for Old Westbury as NYU-Poly combined to face six batters in both of the third frames on the day.
Giovanni Jimenez stroked five hits in six at-bats, including two doubles to go with two RBI and five runs scored. Old Westbury posted three home runs as
Bladimir Toribio went deep in the sixth (2-run HR) and seventh (3-run HR) innings and
Melvin Simmons launched one over the wall in the second inning. Toribio continued to break out of an early season slump by going 3-for-5 with seven RBIs and two runs scored. Simmons, who went 3-for-6 with three runs scored and two RBI, homered to score the first of six runs in the second inning.
Simmons led-off the game with a walk and scored on a error to give Old Westbury an early 1-0 lead. He also closed out the scoring by trotting across the plate for Old Westbury's 30th run off a two-out single by
Josef Schaetzle. In game two, Schaetzle went 5-for-6 with five, RBI, three runs scored and two doubles and a triple to finish the two-game set 10-for-14 with nine runs scored and 10 RBI.
Joe Manzella doubled in part of a 2-for-5 performance with five RBI and three runs scored. Ali Ferrerias scored five runs while
Robert Moschetto and
Edwin Pena followed with four and three runs, respectively. Moschetto, who made the start behind the plate, hit 3-for-4 with two RBI and Pena added three RBI.
Anthony Fernandez scored two runs and stole one of Old Westbury's four bases.
NYU-Poly broke into the scoring column in the fourth inning as Jeff Burdier singled home Carlos Ruiz off
James Huber to cut into the 15-1 deficit. Ruiz and Burdier had two of NYU-Poly's seven hits in game two.
OW starter
James Huber improved to 2-0 on the season, pitching 4.0 innings and holding the Fighting Blue Jays to just one run on three hits. Huber also fanned four batters before
Frank DiMaria worked a scoreless fifth and six innings, striking out three and
William Campbell struck out one in the seventh inning.
Taking the loss for NYU-Poly was David Wolfinger, who allowed 30 runs, 26 of which were earned off 24 hits and 13 walks in 7.0 innings on the mound.
The Panthers will return to the field on Wednesday, March 31 for a non-conference affair with the Baruch College Bearcats. First pitch is slated for 7 p.m. at the Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex in Old Westbury, New York.
