PANTHER BASEBALL DROPS CONFERENCE DOUBLEHEADER TO ST. JOSEPH’S-L.I.

OW will look to bounce back on Sunday for a conference doubleheader at Maritime

OLD WESTBURY, NY (www.oldwestburypanthers.com) – The SUNY College at Old Westbury baseball team dropped a Skyline Conference doubleheader against the St. Joseph's-L.I. Golden Eages on Saturday afternoon, losing the first game 4-1 and the second 7-2. With the losses, Old Westbury drops to 12-16 overall and 8-6 in Skyline Conference while St. Joseph's-L.I. improves to 13-14 and 10-2. 

In game one the Golden Eagles scored two runs in the opening fram to take a 2-0 lead. Ali Ferreiras tripled and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Joe Manzella in the fifth inning for Old Westbury's lone run of the game. St. Joseph's-L.I. added single runs in the eighth and ninth innings off starter Dan Fordyce to secure a 4-1 road victory.

Euris Turbi matched a career-high with two hits to lead Old Westbury. Albert Bevacqua doubled and went 1-for-3 with a stolen base. Mike Gerdes and Mike Cisek paced the Golden Eagles with two hits and drove in a run each while Cisek scored one. Prateek Thamam went 0-4 and struck out twice.

OW starter Dan Fordyce worked nine innings allowing four runs (two earned) on nine hits. He struck out five but pick up his third loss of the season. Jason Dierkes earned his fourth win of the season with a complete game three-strikeout performance. He scattered seven hits and allowed one run and a walk.
St. Joseph's-L.I. won the second game 7-2 to complete the two-game sweep. Old Westbury jumped out to a 1-0 lead at the end of two frames off a double steal that scored Ronald Petito. St. Joseph's-L.I. then took a 2-1 lead at the end of three innings. Mike Gerdes singled in Mike Cisek followed by a triple off the bat of Prateek Thaman to score Gerdes.

The Panthers respond with a single run in the fourth to knot the game at 2-2. Joe Manzella and Ali Ferreiras singled back-to-back to kick off the inning. Manzella trotted across the plate two batters later to close out the scoring for OW. Kevin Briffa was called in to relieve starter James Huber in the fifth innings and surrendered four runs (two earned) on three hits and two walks. Frank DiMaria gave up a run on two hits in the sixth and Bobby Hugli didn't allow a hit in the seventh.

Ali Ferreiras collected two singles in a 2-for-3 game at the plate for Old Westbury. Mike Gerdes (2-for-3) drove in two runs and scored two and Preteek Thaman (2-for-4) tripled and scored one and drove in one to lead the offense for St. Joseph's-L.I.

Old Westbury starter James Huber pitched four innings for the Panthers allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits while striking out one. Kevin Briffa took the loss and fell to 1-1. Joe Benkert improved to 2-2 for St. Joseph's-L.I. after sitting down three on strikes over 5.1 innings of mound work. Benkert gave up two runs on four hits and six walks.

The Panthers will return to the diamond on Sunday, April 18 for a Skyline Conference doubleheader with the Maritime Privateers at Reinhart Field. First pitch is slated for 11 a.m. in Throggs Neck, New York.
