FARMINGDALE STATE TOPS OLD WESTBURY IN SKYLINE CONFERENCE BASEBALL CHAMPIONSHIP GAME

Senior Albert Bevacqua had three hits, three RBI and scored a run in his final Skyline Conference game

The Panthers fall short of capturing the Skyline Conference title; OW will take on Stevens on Thursday for Senior Day

Box Score FARMINGDALE, NY (www.oldwestburypanthers.com) – Farmingdale State (23-13 ) edged SUNY College at Old Westbury (22-18) on Sunday afternoon inside the Farmingdale State Baseball Complex to capture the 2010 Skyline Conference Baseball Championship. The Rams scored five runs in the eighth to retake the lead en route to their third straight conference championship. 

Farmingdale State first baseman Kevin Cutis gave the Rams their first lead of the game lacing a single to center field that scored Zak Nersesian while Labrozzi scored on an error by third baseman Edwin Pena

Old Westbury answered in the fourth with seven runs to grab the 7-2 advantage. Albert Bevacqua tied the game with a double down the left field line to plate home Melvin Simmons and Giovanni Jimenez. Four batters later, Bevacqua scored off a wild pitch. Joe Manzella drew the fourth consecutive walk by Farmingdale State, which allowed Edwin Pena to cross home plate. Jason Kondra singled through the right side to knock in Ali Ferreiras. Melvin Simmons reached on a fielder's choice to score Euris Turbi and followed by an RBI single off the bat of Giovanni Jimenez to close out the seven run inning. 

Panther starter Dan Fordyce was knocked out of the game in the fifth after surrendering three runs on five hits. RBI singles by Donny Moscatelli and pinch hitter Vinny Block and an RBI double by Gibran Bracamonte cut Old Westbury's lead to one run. 

OW reliever Abel Guerrero walked the leadoff batter in the seventh. William Campbell then served up a double to Ryan McAllister that advanced pinch runner Ron Remi over to third and then scored on a sacrifice fly by Nick Wiwczar to tie the game at seven. 

Farmingdale State posted five runs in the eighth frame to take the lead for good off reliever's William Campbell and Bobby Hugli. Hugli inherited bases loaded with one out and Kevin Curtis singled in Nersesian to tie the game and took the lead as Frank Yera scored on a fielder choice. Edwin Pena committed this second error of the game that scored two runs. Nick Wiwczar lifted a sacrifice to right field that scored Danny DeVito for the fifth run of the inning. 

Old Westbury countered with three runs in the bottom of the eighth but came up just short of Farmingdale State's run total. Giovanni Jimenez singled through the right side and advanced to second on an error at the same time that scored Euris Turbi. Albert Bevacqua singled home Jason Kondra followed by an error that added Jimenez to the run total for Old Westbury's tenth and final run. 

Chris Phelan faced three Panthers and retired them to preserve the win for Farmingdale State.
Neither starting pitched would factor in the decision as Dan Fordyce threw 4.2 innings, lasting 1.1 innings longer then Steve King, who left Sunday's game after just 3.1 innings of work. William Campbell was pinned with the loss for Old Westbury. Campbell was touched for three runs on three this and a walk over 1.1 innings of mound work. Bobby Hugli worked the final 1.2 innings and was charged with two runs off three hits and two walks. Chris Phelan earned the victory with 5.2 innings of relief with three strikeouts. Phelan gave up three runs (two earned) on 10 hits. 

Old Westbury pitchers combined to give up 17 hits, four walks and two strikeouts while the Farmingdale State pitching staff surrendered 13 hits, six walks and struck out five. 

Four Panthers registered multiple hits as Albert Bevacqua and Giovanni Jimenez led the way with three hits each. Bevacqua score once and drove in three while Jimenez had two scores and two RBI. Jason Kondra and Ali Ferreiras recorded two hits and Euris Turbi scored twice. Tournament MVP Zak Neresian along with Mike Labrozzi and Frank Yera carried the big bats for the Rams with three this each. Labrozzi scored three time and Neresian and Year crossed the plate twice. Kevin Curtis, Ryan McAllister and Gibram Bracamonte each banged out two hits on the day. 

The Panthers return to action on Thursday, May 6 for a non-conference affair with the Stevens Ducks in Old Westbury, New York at 6 p.m. for the annual Senior Day game. Seniors Tom Benedetto, Albert Bevacqua, William Campbell, Dan Fordyce, Bobby Hugli, Joe Manzella and Robert Moschetto will be honored at 5:45 p.m. for their dedication to Old Westbury Baseball during the “Senior Ceremony” at home plate.
