KIM WEATHERS LIFTS WOMEN’S BASKETBALL TO WIN OVER NYU-POLY

(www.oldwestburypanthers.com) – The SUNY College at Old Westbury women's basketball team took care of Skyline Conference business Tuesday evening when they defeated the NYU-Poly Fighting Blue Jays on the road, 65-57, in Brooklyn, New York. The win improves Old Westbury to 9-3 on the season and 5-2 in conference play, while NYU-Poly drops to 7-4 and 5-2, respectively. 

The Panthers trailed for just 32 seconds before the games lone tie coming at 8-8 with 14:32 to go on a Kim Weathers free-throw. Weathers hit her second free-throw to give OW the lead for good at 9-8 and never looked back. The Panthers extended its lead to as many as 19 in the first half, when Ruth Vargas connected on a jumper to put OW up 39-20. Old Westbury took a 39-22 lead into the break. 

Freshman Kim Weathers logged her sixth consecutive 20-point performance, finishing with 24 points in addition to five rebounds, four assists and three steals. Denise Zajonc * joined Weathers as the only Panthers in double-digits as she finished with 14 points on 5-of-10 shooting from the field. Zajonc also had five rebounds and two steals. Shannon Gilly had ninie rebounds and DeAndra Scott had eight. Ruth Vargas contributed eight points and two blocked shots. 

NYU-Poly was led by 22 points and 19 rebounds by Margaux Pickell. Shelby Bruns added 13 points, seven rebounds and five steals while Tabitha Larsen tossed in 10 points. 

The Panthers defense forced 27 Fighting Blue Jay turnovers, while OW converted into 18 points, while NYU-Poly scored 15 points off OW's 20 miscues. Old Westbury swiped 14 steals, its season average.
Old Westbury was 36.1 percent (26-of-72) from the field and NYU-Poly shot 31.9 (22-of-69). OW made 9-of-16 (56.3%) at the charity stripe, while the Fighting Blue Jays tallied 11-of-17 (64.7%) at the free pitch line. 

PURCHASE PANTHERS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS:
Old Westbury returns to the court on Thursday (Jan. 13), taking on the Purchase Panthers in the “Battle of the Panthers” in Old Westbury, New York. Game time is set to tip at 8 p.m. from the Clark Athletic Center.
