OLD WESTBURY, NY (
www.oldwestburypanthers.com) – The SUNY College at Old Westbury men's basketball team lost to the Purchase Panthers Thursday evening at the Clark Athletic Center in a rematch of the 2009-10 Skyline Conference Championship, 85-79. The loss moves OW to 4-9 on the season and 3-5 in conference play while Purchase improves to 10-3 and 6-2, respectively.
Purchase jumped out to an early 5-0 lead until
Jefferson Guillaume scored Old Westbury's first points on a layup to spark a 12-2 run that was capped off a trey by
Jamal Little to put OW up, 12-8. Purchase responded with a 40-17 run over the final 11:37 to take a commanding 48-29 lead into the half way point. Purchase turned eight first half OW turnovers into 13 points.
Old Westbury cut the second half deficit down to nine (58-49) with a 20-10 run to open the second half with 13:19 on the clock. Purchase responded with a 10-2 spurt over the next 5:54 to go back up by 17 (68-51). OW countered with a 12-1 run to pull within six points (69-63) with 6:26 remaining. Purchase built its lead back up to 10 points with 3:46 left on the second half clock before OW scored eight of the next nine points to pull within three, 78-75. Three points would be as close as OW would get as Purchase outscored the home Panthers 7-4 over the final 1:21 to preserve the victory.
Old Westbury got a double-double of 23 points and 16 rebounds from
Lester Prosper, his 10th of the season, to go along with six blocked shots and two steals.
Tymel Ambrose used 12 assists and 11 points to notch his first double-double of season as did
Jefferson Guillaume, who combined 15 points and 13 rebounds (9 offensive).
Jamal Little poured in 21 points and knocked down four triples.
Marvin Billups led the way for Purchase with 22 points and eight rebounds. Corey Orgias added 17 points and Justin Walters followed with 16 and four steals.
Old Westbury shot 40.8 percent from the field and dominated in the post with a 5-32 rebounding advantage. Purchase shot 44.4 percent from the field.
MARITIME PRIVATEERS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury returns to the court on Sunday (Jan. 16), taking on the Maritime Privateers in a Skyline Conference showdown in Throggs Neck, New York. Game time is set to tip at 4 p.m. from Riesenberg Gymnasium.
