OLD WESTBURY, NY (
www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) – The SUNY College at Old Westbury women's basketball team defeated the Sage Gators in the Skyline Conference opener for both teams,65-54. With the win, the Panthers win their second straight game to improve to 2-3 on the season and 1-0 in Skyline Conference action while Sage falls to 1-5 and 0-1, respectively.
Old Westbury took hold of the first half with just over five minutes remaining. OW used a 9-4 run over the final 5:06 to take a 26-20 lead into the locker room. In the second half, Kara Hackett knocked down a jumper to tie the game at 48-48 with 5:17 left on the clock.
Denise Zajonc * connected on a three-pointer to put Old Westbury ahead by three, 51-48, with 5:04 showing on the second half clock. Old Westbury closed out the final 5:04 with a 17-6 run to solidify the victory.
Denise Zajonc * led the Panthers with a season-high 15 points to go along with three steals in 26 minutes off the bench.
DeAndra Scott followed with 11 points and seven rebounds while
Myajha Elston pulled down a career-high 15 rebounds to go with nine points.
Antoinette Jolly chupped in with eight points, 10 rebounds and four steals while
Abigail Williams and
Clarissa Gallagher each contributed eight points.
Chelsea Martin paced Sage with 11 points followed by Laurel Jicha's nine. Amie Jefferson grabbed a team-high nine boards and blocked four shots.
Old Westbury outshot Sage from the field 30.8 percent (20-65) to 28.4 percent (19-67). Old Westbury connected on 22-of-44 from the free-throw line while Sage knocked down 9-of-14. OW also enjoyed a 51-37 rebounding advantage, including 19 offensive boards that resulted in 11 second chance points.
FARMINGDALE STATE RAMS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: The Panthers return to the hardwood on Wednesday (Dec. 7) when they take on the Farmingdale State Rams in Farmingdale, New York. Game time is set to tip at 6 p.m. on the campus of Farmingdale State College.
