RALLY FALLS SHORT FOR WOMEN’S HOOPS IN 58-50 LOSS TO NYU-POLY

(www.oldwestburypanthers.com) – The SUNY College at Old Westbury women's basketball team fell by the final count of 58-50 Thursday evening on Senior Day at the Clark Athletic Center to the visiting NYU-Poly Fighting Blue Jays. The loss moves Old Westbury to 14-6 overall and 10-5 against the Skyline Conference while NYU-Poly improves to 15-6 on the season with a 11-4 conference tally. 

Tonight's events included the third annual WBCA Pink Zone game which featured a Breast Cancer Awareness walk around the Clark Athletic Center court in addition to Senior Day. OW's seniors Shannon Gilly and Brittany Jones were honored prior to tip off for their dedication to Old Westbury Panther Athletics. 

Freshmen DeAndra Scott and Kim Weathers were the lone Panthers to score in double figures. Scott led the way with 15 points on 6-of-9 shooting to go along with seven boards (four offensive) in 37 minutes of action. NYU-Poly held the Skyline Conference's leading scorer Kim Weathers to just 4-of-24 shooting from the field and finished with 13 points to go along with seven rebounds and five steals, despite turning the ball over eight times. Senior Brittany Jones pulled down a team-best nine boards (four offensive) while Ruth Vargas added six and two blocked shots. Deslyn Applewhaite and Denise Zajonc sparked Old Westbury off the bench with eight points each. 

Margaux Pickell's monster double-double of 24 points and 17 boards to go with four swats led the way for NYU-Poly. Tabitha Larsen finished with 14 points, six rebounds and five assists while Shelby Bruns followed with 14 points. 

Old Westbury was outrebounded for the second straight game. NYU-Poly held a 41-38 edge on the glass, fueled by a game-best 17 rebounds from Margaux Pickell. OW won the battle of the offensive boards, 19-15, translating into just three points. For the game, Old Westbury shot 28.6 percent (20-72) from the field, 22.2 percent (4-18) from three-point range and 54.5 percent (6-11) from the free-throw line. The Fighting Blue Jays shot at a 36.2 rate (21-58) from the floor, 27.3 percent (3-11) from beyond the arc and 86.7 percent (13-15) from the stripe. 

NYU-Poly scored first on a layup by Shelby Bruns and 1:26 later Ruth Vargas put Old Westbury on the board to knot the game at two all. NYU-Poly put together a 21-8 run from 17:47 to 8:52 to go up 23-13. OW responded with a12-2 run from 7:29 to 3:49 to tie the game for the final time. NYU-Poly scored the final four points of the period to head into the locker room with a 29-25 advantage. 

Old Westbury cut the deficit down to one as they scored seven of the first ten points to open the second half with 14:40 remaining on the clock. Shelby Bruns sank a triple at 14:10 to spark an 18-6 run to push NYU-Poly ahead by 15 points with 4:31 left in the second half. OW countered with a 9-0run to pull within six points (53-47) at the 1:55 mark but NYU-Poly nailed five of six from the line down the stretch to hold off the Panthers to preserve a 58-50 road win. 

PURCHASE PANTHERS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury returns to the court on Saturday (Feb. 12), taking on the Purchase Panthers in the “Battle of the Panthers” – Round Two on the road. Old Westbury won round one 62-56 on January 13 at home. Game time is set to tip at 1 p.m. in Purchase, New York.
