OLD WESTBURY, NY (
www.oldwestburypanthers.com) – The SUNY College at Old Westbury baseball team took on the New Paltz Hawks in a non-conference home opening double-header Saturday afternoon at the Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex. New Paltz swept Old Westbury, 4-1 and 8-0 to start the season at 2-0 while OW fell to 1-4 with the pair of losses.
New Paltz scored in the second inning off a throwing error by OW catcher
Steve Henriquez that sent Thomas Pinnola across for the first run. Old Westbury tied the game in the fourth inning on an RBI single by
Benjamin Farias that scored
Melvin Simmons from third. Three runs in the sixth inning ended the day OW starter
Corey Murphy. New Paltz's Matt Kaldon doubled to left to score Mike Marash followed by Phil Riccio's single that drove in two Hawks. Old Westbury mounted two hits in the sixth but were unable to capitalize due in part to a double-play ball hit by
Josef Schaetzle.
Benjamin Farias plated home OW's lone run and wnt 2-for-3 with a stolen base.
Chris DeGennaro added two singles in three at-bats while
Melvin Simmons scored in a 1-for-3 outing at the dish.
Paul Riccio collected three hits and a pair of RBI while Mike Marah and Chris Paulicelli registered multiple hits for New Paltz.
Corey Murphy took the loss for the Panthers after working five and a third innings on the mound to slip to 1-1 on the season. Murphy's outing included five strikeouts while allowing three earned runs and 10 hits.
Marvin Rosario worked one and two thirds on the hill, giving up just one hit and struck out three.
Michael Pinnola opened the season at 1-0 with the complete game victory. He surrendered a run on six hits and two walks and sat down six Panthers on strikes.
In game two, New Paltz set the tone early, with two runs in the first inning as Old Westbury committed three errors. OW starter
Chris Sanabria was knocked out of the game after allowing New Paltz to score four more runs in the second on three hits and one error. Two more unearned runs in the fifth inning closed out the scoring for New Paltz.
Benjamin Farias clubbed OW's lone extra base hit on the day with a double while
Joseph Guido stole the only base for the Panthers in game two. Guido reached base on a single and drew a walk while
Melvin Simmons and
Kevin Cohen both singled.
Matt Prescia doubled went 2-for-4 with a run scored and Jake Cameron hit 2-for-3 with a triple, RBI and one run scored to lead the way for New Paltz. Andrew Grann drove in two Hawks and scored once.
Chris Sanabria was charged with his second loss of the season, after striking out two in three innings of work. Sanabria gave up two earned runs on seven hits and two walks.
Steven Chapter,
Ranser Reyes and
Kevin Briffa tossed the final four innings of no-hit baseball in relief of Sanabria.
Chris Chismar was victorious in his first outing of the year, ringing up nine Panthers on strikes while allowing four hits and one walk in six innings of work. Nick Monaco pitched a perfect seventh inning to closed the game.
COBLESKILL FIGHTING TIGERS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: The Panthers return to the field for a non-conference double-header on the road with the Cobleskill Fighting Tigers on Sunday (Mar. 13) in Flemington, New Jersey. First pitch is slated for noon from Diamond Nation.
