Mount Saint Vincent wins opener before Old Westbury takes game two, 17-0

OLD WESTBURY, NY (www.oldwestburypanthers.com) – The SUNY College at Old Westbury Panthers baseball team split a Skyline Conference doubleheader with the Mount Saint Vincent Dolphins at the Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex on Thursday, dropping the opener 4-3 and taking the finale 17-0. Old Westbury is now 16-13 overall and 8-6 in Skyline Conference action while MSV moves to 13-17 and 9-4, respectively.

The Dolphins won the first game 4-3 behind a seven inning outing from starter Mike Trainor (4-2). He allowed three runs (two earned) on 10 hits, while striking out one and walking two. Trainor's shakiest inning was the first, when the Panthers scored all three of its runs. Joseph Guido, Melvin Simmons and Anthony Orsano led off with singles for Old Westbury. Orsano's single drove in Guido and Simmons. Josef Schaetzle followed with a groundout to second that scored Orsano.

Mount Saint Vincent posted two on the board in the fourth inning off RBI singles by Mark Sargente and Kevin Coogan. Vinny Todino singled in Fernando Suriel to knot the game at 3-3 in the sixth. Mike Pope singled home Josh Sharpe in the seventh for the go ahead and game-winning run.

Ryan Bresnahan (1-4) was charged with the loss for Old Westbury after working six innings on the mound. Bresnahan surrendered four runs on 10 hits and one walk before Marvin Rosario worked two innings of relief. James Labartino picked up his first save of the season for Mount Saint Vincent.

Old Westbury had 12 hits on the game as Joseph Guido, Melvin Simmons, Chris DeGennaro and Joseph Caraballo registered multiple hits to lead the offensive attack. Mount Saint Vincent was paced by multiple hits off the bats of Mike Pope, Mark Sargents and Fernando Suriel.

In the second game, Chris Sanabria improved to 3-3 after working his second consecutive complete game outing. He struck out six and allowed three hits and dealt three walks to earn his first shutout. Old Westbury got on the board early when Joseph Guido led off with a double and scored two batters later off single by Josef Schaetzle. Joseph Caraballo ripped a single down the left field line to drive in Benjamin Farias to put OW ahead by two runs. Old Westbury scored two more in the third when Chris DeGennaro lifted a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Melvin Simmons while Anthony Orsano crossed home plate on a wild pitch. Five more runs were scored in the fourth inning for Old Westbury to take a 9-0 lead. Old Westbury tacked on eight more runs in the top of the seventh.

Old Westbury's Joseph Guido, Melvin Simmons, Anthony Orsano and Josef Schaetzle combined to hit 9-for-17 with eight RBI and 11 runs scored. Michael Weingartner and Kevin Cohen also added two hits each. Guido, Simmons, Orsano and Joseph Caraballo all swept a pair of bases.

Mike McManus was charged with the loss to drop to 3-3 on the season. McManus lasted just three innings, giving up five runs (two earned) on five hits and three walks.

PURCHASE PANTHERS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: The Panthers return to the field for a Skyline Conference battle Saturday (Apr. 16) with the Purchase Panthers in Old Westbury, New York. First pitch of the “Battle of the Panthers” is set for 12 Noon from the Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex.
