www.oldwestburypanthers.com) – No. 5 SUNY College at Old Westbury Panthers baseball team (22-19) was crowned runner-up of the 2011 Skyline Conference Championship Tournament for the second consecutive season after dropping a 10-1 decision to No. 2 Farmingdale State(22-12) Sunday in Farmingdale, New York.
Farmingdale State scored early and often with a three run first inning. Kevin Curtis gave the Rams a two run lead off the power of a triple that scored Frank Yera and Terrence Bohanon. Two batters later, Ryan Rubenstein tripled home Curtis for three run advantage. Two more runs crossed the plate for Farmingdale State in the third when back-to-back run scoring singles by Brandon Cruz and Bohannon gave the Rams a five run cushion. In the fifth, Brandon Cruz tripled home Curtis, two batters later Thomas Butler tripled to left field, scoring Rubenstein. Ryan McAllister led off the sixth with a walk, stole second and was driven in two batters later on a single by David Zilnicki. Kevin Curtis roped a triple to right field that scored David Zilnicki and advanced home on an error by
Joseph Guido in the eighth inning.
Anthony Orsano put Old Westbury on the scoreboard in the ninth inning with a lead-off homer over the left field wall.
Chris Sanabria (4-4) was charged with the loss for Old Westbury after working 2.1 innings, giving up five runs on eight hits and struck out two Rams. Mike Dolce (4-2) earned Skyline Championship win for Farmingdale State. Dolce logged 6.2 shutout innings before J.R. Lott closed out final 2.1 innings to hold onto the victory.
Anthony Orsano blasted his fourth home run of the season in a 1-for-4 game while
Blake Barbeito led Old Westbury with a double in going 2-for-2 at the plate with a walk. Barbeito went 10-for-18 during the Skyline Tournament. Five Rams registered multiple hits on the day while Skyline Tournament MVP Kevin Curtis went 3-for-4 with a pair of Farmingdale State's five triples on the day to go along with three RBI and three runs scored.
KEYSTONE GIANTS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: The Panthers return to the field for a non-conference doubleheader Wednesday (Mary 4) with the Keystone Giants in Old Westbury, New York. First pitch is slated for 2:30 p.m. from the Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex.
