www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) – The SUNY College at Old Westbury men's basketball team were eagerly look for redemption against the Purchase Panthers and were victorious with a 78-66 Skyline Conference victory Thursday evening in Purchase, New York. Purchase entered the contest having won the previous four outings with Old Westbury. OW improved to 7-6 on the season and 4-3 in conference play while Purchase drops to 7-6 and 5-1, respectively.
Old Westbury led wire-to-wire and jumped out to a 10-0 lead to start the game. OW pushed the advantage to as many as 22 in the first half, taking a 46-24 lead into the break.
What turned into a rout proved to be a tight game. Old Westbury led, 61-31, until Purchase countered with a 29-3 run from 14:11 to 6:53 to pull within four (64-60). Leading 68-64 with 3:39 left, Old Westbury closed out the game with a 10-2 run to grab a 78-66 victory.
Tavon McNair played big for Old Westbury, finishing with 27 points and nine rebounds to help the Panthers win.
Kerel Mitchell reached double figures for the 12th time this season with 16 points, while
Everard Bisnauth posted 10 points on 3-of-6 shooting from three-point territory.
Omari Trebuse swept away a team-best three steals.
DJ Smith led Purchase with 17 points on 5-of-8 shooting from beyond the arc. Justin Person (14 points, 7-9 FG), Brando Serrano (13 points) and John Pressley (10 points) followed in double figures. William Williams nabbed a game-high four steals.
Old Westbury outshot Purchase from the field 50.9 percent (27-53) to 42.9 percent (27-63). Old Westbury connected on 10-of-22 from three-point land while Purchase knocked down 8-of-26. OW also enjoyed a 34-27 rebounding advantage, turning 18 offensive boards into 25 second chance points. OW also converted 20 Purchase turnovers into 22 points.
NYU-POLY FIGHTING BLUE JAYS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: The Panthers return to the hardwood for Skyline Conference action on Sunday (Jan. 15) when they hit the road for the battle with the NYU-Poly Fighting Blue Jays in Brooklyn, New York. Game time is set to tip at 3 p.m. from Jacobs Gymnasium.
