OLD WESTBURY, NY (
www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) – The SUNY College at Old Westbury baseball team took two Skyline Conference games from the visiting Mount Saint Vincent Dolphins by the scores of 12-6 and 11-10 on Sunday afternoon from the Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex. Old Westbury (16-5) improves to 5-1 in conference play while sending Mount Saint Vincent (8-9) to 1-3.
Mount Saint Vincent jumped out to an early one run lead to open the game as Old Westbury starter
Chris Sanabria hit Kevin Coogan with the bases loaded to send in T.J. Laible for the initial run. Old Westbury tied the game in the bottom of the first with a single by
Brian Reutter that scored
Paul Valerio. Old Westbury took the lead for good in the second on back-to-back run scoring singles by
Benjamin Farias and
Blake Barbeito to make it 3-1. Old Westbury added one in the third off
Anthony Orsano's RBI double. Old Westbury scored four in the fifth and
Brian Walsh's two run double scored
Anthony Orsano and
John Angelino for the eventual game-winning runs. Old Westbury tacked on four more in the sixth to make it 12-3 while Mount Saint Vincent scored three in the eight but were unable to overcome the deficit.
Anthony Orsano (3-4, RBI, R) paced Old Westbury with three hits and three stolen bases to go along with two doubles.
John Angelino followed with a 2-for-4 game, including a two-run homer in the sixth to go with a fifth inning double.
Brian Reutter added two hits with three RBI and two runs scored in addition to three stolen bases.
Paul Valerio (1-3, RBI, 3B, 2 SB) and
Benjamin Farias (1-3, RBI, 2 SB) both scored two runs.
Christopher DeGennaro (1-2, RBI, R) singled in the second inning to extend his hit streak to 16 games. T.J. Laible (2-5, 2 R), Mark Sargente (2-4) and Leutrim Hoxha (2-5, RBI) added multiple hits for Mount Saint Vincent.
Chris Sanabria (1-0) picked up his first victory of the season, striking out five over six innings of work, giving up three runs on seven hits and two walks. Matt Calandrillo (2-2) took the loss for Mount Saint Vincent, surrendering 11 runs off 12 hits and five walks in 5.1 innings.
Old Westbury held the advantage in hits (15-11), extra base hits (6-2) and stolen bases (14-0). Mount Saint Vincent stranded 14 runners compared to Old Westbury's four. Old Westbury pitching struck out eight and walked five while Mount Saint Vincent tallied three and six, respectively.
In the finale,
Brian Reutter put Old Westbury on the board first with a one-out double, followed by stealing third and advancing home on a throwing error by catcher Tyler Reith. Two more Panthers crossed the plate in the third with
Paul Valerio's run scoring triple and a sacrifice fly by
Anthony Orsano.
Steve Mare singled home
Pat Amato in the fourth to give Old Westbury a 4-0 lead. The Dolphins mounted a comeback in the fifth and sixth innings, ending starter
Frank DiMaria's day while going through relievers
James Roubal and
Stephen Chapter to take a 9-4 advantage. Mount Saint Vincent added a solo run in the seventh off reliever
J.C. Costa to grab a 10-4. Old Westbury owned the bottom of the seventh inning, scoring six runs off six hits and one error to force extra innings.
Pat Amato stroked a two-out double that scored
Brian Walsh and
Michael Weingartner for the game tying runs. Fast forward to the bottom of the ninth when
John Angelino doubled and stole third before Walsh singled up the middle to complete the comeback.
Old Westbury produced a total of six players with multiple hits, led by
Paul Valerio's (4-5, 3B, 2 R, RBI) career-best four hits.
Christopher DeGennaro singled home
Anthony Orsano in the seventh to extend his hit streak to 17 games.
Brian Reutter (2-3, RBI, 2 R, 2 SB), Orsano (2-4, RBI, R),
John Angelino (2-5, 2 RBI, R, SB),
Pat Amato (2-4, 2 RBI, R) and
Steve Mare (2-2, RBI, R) all collected multiple hits. Josh Sharpe drove in three runs and Jason Rivera (2-5, RBI, R), Kevin Coogan (2-4, RBI, R) and Vinny Todino (2-4, 2 R) followed with multiple hits for Mount Saint Vincent.
Old Westbury starter
Frank DiMaria tied a career-high with nine strikeouts, but was unable to get out of the sixth inning, serving up four runs off five hits and three walks in 5.2 frames.
J.C. Costa (1-0) picked up the victory in 3.1 innings of relief, striking out three and was charged with one run off three hits. Anthony Mongelli was tagged with Mount Saint Vincent's loss, giving up three hits including the game winning run scoring single in 1.2 innings of work.
Old Westbury outhit Mount Saint Vincent, 16-11, including 6-3 in extra base hits to go along with a 3-0 edge in stolen bases. Mount Saint Vincent left eight runners on base while Old Westbury stranded five.
