OLD WESTBURY, NY (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) –  The SUNY College at Old Westbury baseball team opened their Skyline Conference schedule with a 22-3 and 21-1 sweep at home over the visiting Yeshiva Maccabees on Friday morning.  Old Westbury (7-3) jumps out to a 2-0 start in conference action while Yeshiva (0-5) fell to 0-4 in league play.

Yeshiva planted two runs off three hits in the first innings off Panther starter David Stern.  Old Westbury responded with nine runs in the bottom of the first off three hits and four errors to secure the victory.  Brian Reutter doubled home Paul Valerio for Old Westbury's first run.  Three batters later, Brian Walsh laced the eventual game-winning double down the right field line that scored Anthony Orsano and John Angelino to put Old Westbury ahead 4-2. 

Old Westbury's Brian Walsh collected a career-high five hits in going 5-for-5 (2-2B) at the plate with four runs batted in and two runs scored.  Paul Valerio registered his third three-hit game of the season, finishing 3-for-4 (2-3B) with four runs scored, five RBI and two stolen bases.  Michael Weingartner scored four runs, robbed three bags and had a pair of hits while John Angelino had two hits, one RBI, three runs scored and two stolen bases. Brian Reutter (1-2, 2-R) and Anthony Orsano (1-5, 2 R) both drove in three runs while Pat Amato (1-5, RBI, 2-SB) and Steve Mare (1-3, RBI, SB) both scored two runs.  Joel Feigenbaum led Yeshiva's offensive attack with a 2-for-3 game at the plate, including two runs scored.  Shya Weinstein drove in two Maccabees in a 1-for-2 showing at the plate.     

David Stern (1-0) picked up Old Westbury's victory after tossing three innings of six hit ball, allowing three runs and fanning a career-best five batters.  Joseph Rantinella and Alexander Abanavas both worked two innings in relief of Stern, striking out five and three batters each, respectively.  Jonathan Berger (0-2) was tagged with Yeshiva's loss, surrendering 14 runs (7 earned) off nine hits and five walks.  

Old Westbury tallied a season-high 18 hits and 13 stolen bases in the opener while limiting Yeshiva to just six hits.   On the mound, Old Westbury registered 13 strikeouts without issuing a free pass compared to Yeshiva, who had seven walks and one strikeout. 

In game two, Old Westbury scored all the runs they needed in the opening frame to cruise to victory.  Paul Valerio led off the game with a single and stole two bases before scoring on an error for the games initial run.  Brian Reutter advanced home on Brian Walsh's stolen base for what proved to be the game-winner.  Yeshiva scored their lone run in the sixth when Joseph Gangi served up a double to Eithan Rubin that scored Adam Volk to make it a 17-1 game. 

Jacob Coners racked up a career-best three hits in five at bats to go along with four RBI and two runs scored while classmate Brandon Stein had a personal-best 2-for-5 game with three RBI and two runs scored for Old Westbury.  Old Westbury also received multiple hits from Paul Valerio (2-4, 3-R, RBI, 3-SB), Benjamin Farias (2-5, 2-R, RBI, 2-SB) and Blake Barbeito (2-5, 3-R, 2-RBI).  Valerio's two hits extended his hit-streak to 10 games and Brian Walsh's nine game hit streak ended, despite stealing three bases and scoring two runs.  Jake Frankel paced Yeshiva with a 2-for-3 game at the plate while Adam Volk and Eithan Rubin both doubled. 

Christopher Vitale notched is first-career victory, throwing five innings of five hit shutout baseball to go with seven strikeouts and just one walk.  Joseph Gangi worked two innings of relief, sitting down six Maccabees on strikes.  Yeshiva starter Zevi Weisinger took the loss, allowing five runs (two earned) over three innings of mound work. 

Old Westbury held the advantage in hits (14-8) and stolen bases (11-1) while Yeshiva stranded eight runners on base compared to Old Westbury's six.  Old Westbury registered 13 strikeouts and one walk as Yeshiva had four strikeouts and three walks. 
 
CCNY BEAVERS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: The Panthers return to the diamond for a non-conference battle on Saturday (Mar. 10) against the visitng CCNY Beavers from the Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex.  First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m. in Old Westbury, New York.
