The SUNY College of Old Westbury women's basketball team travelled across the East River Wednesday evening as the Panthers on the City College of New York Beavers in a non-league contest. Old Westbury sizzled out of the gate with a 14-0 spurt in the first 6:23 of action and coasted to a 71-41 win over CCNY. The Panthers improve their record to 8-6, picking up their fourth consecutive victory, while the Beavers drop to 3-12 on the season.
DeAndra Scott (8-15 FG) and Clarissa Gallagher (5-8 3FG) led all scorers with 17 points apiece as Raven Pentz added 12 points, six rebounds and two steals in the win. Raven Price grabbed 10 boards and Antoinette Jolly registered game highs of seven assists and three steals.
Bria Fisher paced the Beavers with 13 points while teammates Kendra Rivers had 12 points and Syretta Williams collected 10. Fisher and Williams both pulled down 10 boards while Giovanna Blanco swatted a game high four blocks.
Pentz ignited the Panthers' hot start scoring seven-of-her-12 points on two made jumpers and a trey from the corner to begin the game. CCNY found themselves within single-digits slicing the Panthers' lead to eight, 20-12, on a Williams field goal and a triple by Rivers at the 8:18 mark of the first. Scott's three-point play with 7:58 left in the first pushed the Panthers' lead back up to double-digits and 40 seconds later, Gallagher nailed a trey giving Old Westbury a 26-14 lead. The Panthers' defense mystified the Beavers over the final 7 minutes of the first, holding CCNY to three points, while finishing the first half on a 12-3 run, taking a 36-17 lead into intermission.
Old Westbury continued to sizzle in the second stanza netting the first 10 points and extending their lead to 29, 46-17 with 17:33 shown on the scoreboard. The Panthers' started and ended their run with two treys by Gallagher and Pentz as Scott was sandwiched in-between netting the last four of the run. A made free throw by Blanco got CCNY within 20 points with a shade over 11 minutes left, however, a 12-1 Panthers' run over the following six minutes gave Old Westbury its largest lead of the night, 63-31.
The Panthers' defense mystified the Beavers as they held CCNY to 23.7 percent shooting from the floor. Old Westbury shot 39.5 percent from the field, 53.8 percent behind the three point line and held a 57-42 advantage on the boards.
