MONTCLAIR, NJ (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) - The SUNY College at Old Westbury women's volleyball team traveled to the Panzer Athletic Center for the Montclair State Red Hawks tri-match on Saturday afternoon. Old Westbury opened the day with a 3-1 (25-15, 25-21, 14-25, 26-24) win over the John Jay Bloodhounds (2-14) to snap a four-game losing streak. Montclair State (10-6) defeated the Panthers (3-9) with straight set victories of 25-12, 25-11 and 25-13.
Old Westbury posted a season-best 17 aces and 40 kills in the opening match against John Jay. Kimberly Catania used 12 assists and 10 kills to post her 25th career double-double. Catania also had a career-best eight aces to go along with seven digs and one block. Jocelyn Small followed with her second career double-double, combining 16 kills (tied career-high) and a career-best 20 digs (previous best of 15 vs. Brooklyn 9/17/12) while rejecting three blocks. Rayn Brown dished out a career-best 18 assists (previous best off 9 vs. CCNY 9/24/13) in addition to nine kills and two aces. Mudeline Derisma served up a personal best seven aces to go with nine digs while Allie Giancola and Samantha Howley each chipped in with 14 and 10 digs, respectively.
Old Westbury took a quick 4-0 lead in the opening set as Derisma served up three straight aces. Catania added two aces in the set to put Old Westbury up 10-4. Derisma added two more aces in a 9-3 Panther run to close out the set for a 25-15 win. Old Westbury had its best hitting set of the match, finishing at .241 (11 kills-4 errors-29 total attacks).
In the second set, Catania nailed down a kill to put the Panthers up for good at 4-3. The Panthers hit .103 (11 kills-7 errors-39 total attacks) on the set to win 25-21.
John Jay forced a fourth set with a 25-14 victory, ended on four consecutive Marina Hot aces on Old Westbury. Old Westbury had its worst hitting set of the match at a rate of .043 (7 kills-6 errors-23 total attacks), compared to John Jay's best set at .095 (8 kills-6 errors-21 total attacks).
Old Westbury regrouped to secure the victory with a 26-24 win in the fourth set off the power of hitting .105 (11 kills-7 errors-38 total attacks) while holding John Jay to .044 (10 kills-8 errors-45 total attacks). Old Westbury found itself in a 19-11 hole before closing out the match on a 15-5 run.
Hot finished with six aces to pace John Jay and Ashley Diaz recorded 11 kills and Katherine Bonilla distributed 20 assists and scooped up 16 digs. John Jay finished the match with a .058 hitting percentage (30 kills-23 erros-121 total attacks).
Against Montclair State, the Panthers were unable to get it going on a consistent basis, ending the match with a .016 hitting percentage (14 kills-13 erros-64 total attacks) as the Red Hawks held the lead from start to finish. Old Westbury racked up 13 points in the final set while having its finest hitting set f the match at .176 (6 killls-3 errors-17total attacks). The Red Hawks whaled away at a rate of .360 (36 kills-9 errors-75 total attacks). Old Westbury's serving dropped off in the second match, finishing with a season-low three aces compared to 17 by Montclair State.
Small paced Old Westbury with six kills to hit .250 in 12 swings. Catania added seven assists, two aces and one block while Giancola finished with 12 digs.
Sara Girgus led the way for Montclair State with a match-high seven kills and four aces. Angela Campo had 29 assists and seven digs
