Tyrik Tucker scored a game-high 31 points as the SUNY College at Old Westbury men's basketball team rolled to their tenth straight victory Wednesday evening with a 93-81 win over the NYU-Poly Fighting Jays from Jacobs Gymnasium. Old Westbury (20-3) stays perfect in Skyline Conference play, improving to 15-0, while NYU-Poly (6-15) dropped to 3-12 in conference action.
NYU-Poly's Fabian Thomas scored seven quick points to stun Old Westbury in the opening minutes, helping the Jays jump out to a 10-3 lead. After trailing to start the opening 6:02 of the game,
Kerel Mitchell connected on back-to-back treys to put the Panthers up for good with 13:58 remaining. Old Westbury scored 21 unanswered points over a 3:31 stretch to take a 24-10 lead. NYU-Poly used a 20-10 run to slice the deficit to four points with 5:59 left. Old Westbury took a 53-39 advantage into the break after quickly building the lead back to double-digits with a 17-2 run from 5:43 to 1:55.
NYU-Poly opened the second-half with a 7-0 run to trail 53-46 just two minutes into the final stanza. Mitchell hit a three-pointer followed by a
Joshua Bailey jumper to put Old Westbury up 12 with 15:46 remaining. NYU-Poly made it a 73-70 game with a 9-2 run and a 7-0 spurt with 2:16 remaining pulled the Jays within two points, 81-79. NYU-Poly missed all five shot attempts in the final 43 seconds as Old Westbury hit 8-of-10 from the free-throw line and outscored the Jays 10-0 over the to close out the remaining 1:05. Tucker sparked Old Westbury down the stretch by scoring eight of the final 10 points.
Tyrik Tucker poured in 18 of his game-high 31 points in the second half and finished the game shooting 9-of-18 from the field and 12-of-17 from the line. Tucker added 11 rebounds to notch his seventh double-double of the season to go along with four steals and four assists.
Darnell Chavis scored a career-high 20 points in 23 minutes off the bench in addition to grabbing nine rebounds.
Rashawn McCarthy scored 13 points and
Kerel Mitchell hit four triples to finish with 12 points and three steals.
Stefan Stoyanovich and Brendan Gallagher both scored 19 points to pace NYU-Poly. Stoyanovich pulled-down a game-high 14 boards and Jamel Gist chipped in with seven points, eight rebounds and eight assists. Thomas Fabian finished with 10 points after scoring seven of NYU-Poly's opening 10.
Old Westbury shot 45.6 percent from the field (31-68), 33.3 percent from three-point range (8-24) and 67.6 percent from the free-throw line (23-34). NYU-Poly hit 37.3 percent from the floor (28-75), 28.6 percent from long distance (8-28) and 68 percent from the charity stripe (17-25). NYU-Poly held a 50-47 rebounding advantage en route to scoring 21 second chance points off 17 offensive boards. Old Westbury converted 15 NYU-Poly turnovers into 18 points. Old Westbury finished with nine turnovers, their second lowest total of the season.
