OLD WESTBURY, NY (
www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) The SUNY College at Old Westbury softball team earned a pair of run rule victories against the visiting John Jay Bloodhounds Friday afternoon in a home opener from the Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex. Old Westbury took game one, 10-2, in six innings, and followed with a 14-2 victory in five innings to complete the sweep. Old Westbury improves to 4-2 on the season while sending John Jay off to an 0-2 start.
Game 1 – Old Westbury 10 – John Jay 2 (6 Inn.)
Old Westbury broke the scoring ice in the first inning with a double off the bat of
Jacqui Alvarado to score
Samantha Howley and
Alyssa Clancy for a 2-0 lead. In the third, Alvarado singled in
Jennifer Jean for what proved to be the game winning run. Old Westbury added two more in the fourth and fifth frames while
Jessica Spero's RBI single in the sixth capped a three run inning to capture the run rule victory. Kaylee Fry took Old Westbury starter
Alyssa Clancy deep with a two run homer in the sixth to put John Jay on the board.
Clancy (3-2) struck out eight over six innings in the circle to earn Old Westbury's victory, allowing two runs off five hits. Sara McKenna (0-1) took John Jay's loss, surrendering 10 runs (9 earned) off 15 hits.
Alvarado's 3-for-4 performance at the plate with a pair of doubles and four RBI paced Old Westbury.
Nicole Petrucci (2-4, RBI, R, 3B),
Samantha Howley (2-3, 2 R, RBI),
Jennifer Jean (2-4, 2 R, 2B) and
Jessica Spero (2-4, 2 RBI, R) all had multiple hits while every Panther starter tallied a hit. Kaylee Fry finished with a 2-3 game at the plate for John Jay.
Game 2 – Old Westbury 14 – John Jay 2 (5 Inn.)
The Bloodhounds jumped ahead early with Kaylee Fry's run scoring double in the first inning for a 1-0 lead.
Alyssa Clancy's RBI double and
Jacqui Alvarado's RBI single answered in the bottom of the first for Old Westbury. Old Westbury opened the scoring gates in the second, scoring four runs to hold a 6-1 advantage. Alvarado drove in a pair on a double while
Jennifer Jean and
Corrine Protasiewicz added run scoring singles. John Jay scored their second and final run with a Jasmine Guerra RBI single in the fourth. Eight more Panthers crossed the plate in the fourth to put the game out of reach, earning Old Westbury their third run rule victory of the season.
Alyssa Clancy (4-2) tossed four innings to snag Old Westbury's win and
Emily McKay pitched a scoreless fifth to make her pitching debut. Leeann Rosa (0-1) was tapped with the loss after serving up 14 runs (13 earned) on 11 hits and eight walks.
Alvarado once again carried the big bat for Old Westbury, finishing the game with a 4-for-4 performance at the plate, driving in five runs off two doubles.
Nicole Petrucci scored three runs after drawing three walks and swiping two bases and
Jennifer Jean (2-4, 3 RBI, 2 R),
Alyssa Clancy (2-2, RBI, 3 R, 2 BB) and
Corrine Protasiewicz (2-4, 2 RBI, R) banged out multiple hits. Ashley Kersting's 2-for-3 game at the plate led John Jay.
BROOKLYN BULLDOGS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury returns to action on Tuesday (March 19) for a non-conference doubleheader on the road with the Brooklyn Bulldogs in Brooklyn, New York. First pitch is set for 4 p.m. from the Campus Field.
