(www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) - The SUNY College at Old Westbury baseball team won a Skyline Conference opening doubleheader against the visiting NYU-Poly Fighting Jays Saturday from Baseball Heaven.  The Panthers won 27-8 in the opener and completed the sweep with a 17-2 game two victory.  Old Westbury (5-7) jumps out to a 2-0 start in conference play while sending NYU-Poly (2-7) to 1-3.
Game One: Old Westbury 27, NYU-Poly 8

NYU-Poly jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead with three run-scoring singles in the top of the first inning.  Old Westbury answered with four runs to take a one run lead at the end of one.  Brian Walsh put Old Westbury on the board with an RBI single that pushed across Jeremy Delgado to start the scoring spree.  John Angelino doubled home Kevin Licul and Peter Romeo slapped an infield single that later scored Angelino. 

After Nate Albers and Anthony Finch went back-to-back on big flies off Old Westbury starter Tyler Levine, who did not factor into the decision after throwing 2.2 innings.  Old Westbury responded with eight runs on seven hits and seven stolen bases in the bottom of the second.  Walsh ripped a two-run triple into right center to score Paul Valerio and Delgado to open the second inning scoring gates.  Romeo recorded Old Westbury's sixth straight hit, clubbing a two-run double to score the eventual game-winning runs as Licul and Angelino crossed the plate. 

Licul took NYU-Poly starter Nikokas Jimenez deep in the third for his first homer of the season while Albers drove his second round tripper of the game in the fourth to make it a 13-7 game. 

Old Westbury added two runs in the fourth and 12 more in the fifth to go up 27-8.  In the fifth, Eddie Hernandez, Jacob Coners, Romeo and Robert Crocitto all delivered two-run extra base hits. 

Old Westbury finished the game with 21 stolen bases, 24 hits, including 11 extra base hits to go along with drawing eight walks.  Old Westbury had nine players finish with multiple hits, led by Kevin Licul (3-4, 4 R, 2 RBI, 2 SB), John Angelino (3-3, 3 R, 2 RBI, 4 SB), Peter Romeo (3-6, 5 RBI, 2 R, 2 SB) and Brian Walsh (2-4, 4 RBI, 2 R, SB).  Paul Valerio (2-3, 2 R, RBI) added five stolen bases while Angelino and Jeremy Delgado (2-3, 4 R, RBI) followed with four. 
Nate Albers (3-4, 3 RBI, 3 R) and Anthony Finch (3-4, 3 R, 2 RBI) paced NYU-Poly with three hits apiece.

James Scagnelli snagged the Old Westbury win in relief, tossing 2.2 innings of one hit ball to improve to 1-0 on the season.  

Nikokas Jimenez took was tapped for 13 runs (11 earned) in three innings to take NYU-Poly's loss.

Game Two: Old Westbury 17, NYU-Poly 2
Old Westbury posted four runs in the opening inning and never looked back as they piled on multiple runs in every inning leading to a 17-2 win in seven frames. 
Brian Walsh once again broke the scoring ice by driving in Paul Valerio and Joseph Walsh off a first inning single.  Four batters later, Jacob Coners singled to score Brian Walsh and Jonathan Pagan for a 4-0 lead. 

In the second inning, Brandon Stein drew a walk to open the second.  Valerio followed with a single- turned into a three base error to come around to score as Old Westbury went up 5-0.  Brian Walsh reached on an infield error to score Joseph Walsh for a 6-0 lead.

Old Westbury continued to mash at the plate, finishing with an 18-3 hitting advantage over NYU-Poly, including a 5-3 edge in extra base hits.  Old Westbury totaled 12 stolen bases in the finale, led by Joseph Walsh's six while Paul Valerio and Jacob Coners followed with two.  Six Panthers finished with multiple hits while Joseph Walsh banged out a double and two singles while scoring four runs to lead the offensive charge.  Valerio (2-3, 2 R, RBI), Jonathan Pagan (2-3, 2 R), John Angelino (2-4, 2 R, RBI, SB), Coners (2-3, 3 RBI, 2 R) and Steve Mare (2-4, 3 RBI, R) each contributed two hits.  Brian Walsh tallied four RBI in game two and finished with eight on the day. 

Frank DiMaria (1-0) fanned a career-high 10 batters, working six innings on the hill, allowing two runs on three hits.  Andres Machuca was called on to close out the seventh, striking out three batters as Old Westbury finished the game with 13 strikeouts and one walk. 

Julian Santulli was dealt the loss, giving up 14 runs on 14 hits in five innings.       

FARMINGDALE STATE RAMS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury returns to the diamond on Sunday (March 24) against the Farmingdale State Rams in a rematch of the 2012 Skyline Conference title game.  First pitch of the doubleheader in set for 12 p.m. from the Baseball Field at the Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex in Old Westbury, New York.
