Offensive explosion in game two salvages split for @OW_Panthers Baseball against Farmingdale State

(www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) - OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. – The SUNY College at Old Westbury Panthers hosted the Farmingdale State Rams on Sunday afternoon at Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex in a Skyline Conference doubleheader. The Rams took game one, 8-4, however, the Panthers scored in every inning of the finale, winning 19-3. With the split, Old Westbury goes to 6-8 overall and 3-1 in league action while Farmingdale State evens their record to 9-9 and 1-2 in conference play.

Game One: Farmingdale State 8, Old Westbury 4
Farmingdale State broke a 3-3 tie by scoring four times in the top of the fourth, stretching their lead to 7-3. Tom Rydzewski smacked a two-run single to right field, giving the Rams a 5-3 lead.  Later in the inning, Rydzewski successfully stole second and third base, and scored on a RBI sacrifice fly off the bat of Anthony Alvino for a 6-3 advantage.

Rydzewski finished 3-for-5 with three RBI and one run scored for the Rams.   Old Westbury was led by Kevin Licul, who batted 2-for-4 with one run scored, and John Angelino, who went 2-for-3 with a RBI and one run scored.

Jeremy Delgado's speed ignited the Panthers to an early 1-0 edge in the bottom of the first. He laced a single to center and then stole second and third base, respectively. The Rams' catcher attempted to get Delgado out at third, but his throw missed the mark, allowing Delgado to score.

Farmingdale State responded with three runs in the top of the second. Eric Weiner belted a two-run  single through the left side, giving the visitors a 2-1 lead. The next batter, Rydzweski hit a RBI single up the middle, bringing Weiner around the bases to extend their lead to 3-1.

The Panthers' answered in their next at-bat knotting the game at 3-3. Licul and Angelino started the Old Westbury rally with consecutive singles. Brandon Stein roped a RBI single and moved Angelino to third. Angelino tied the game on a RBI sacrifice fly by Eddie Hernandez.

In the bottom of the fifth, Old Westbury sliced the Rams' lead to 7-4 when Angelino cracked a RBI single. Farmingdale State wasted no time to push their lead back to four, 8-4, in the top of the sixth when David Zilnicki delivered a RBI single up the middle.

The Panthers threatened to inch closer in both the seventh and eighth innings with runners on third base, but Farmingdale State escaped both innings unscathed.

Michael Dolce picked up his second win of the season allowing one earned run and two hits in three innings of relief while Armisendy Nunez took the loss, yielding seven runs, five earned, and nine hits in five innings pitched.

Game Two: Old Westbury 19, Farmingdale State 3
Old Westbury exploded for a season-high 19 runs on 21 hits en route to a 19-3 win over Farmingdale State in the finale. The Panthers' offensive attack was sparked by a combined seven RBI effort by Peter Romeo and Brian Walsh and a combined seven hit, six run performance by Paul Valerio and Angelino.

Romeo finished the game going 2-for-5 with four RBI and two runs scored while Walsh hit 2-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored. Also for Old Westbury, Valerio went 4-for-5 with four runs scored and Angelino batted 3-for-4 with two runs scored.

Justin Steigerwald led the Rams by going 3-for-3 with an RBI.

Walsh smoked a two-run RBI single to right center, which widened the Panthers' lead to 5-0 in the second. The Panthers put the game out of reach in the fifth, by crossing the plate five times all with two-outs. Jacob Conors' RBI single made it a 9-0 contest and the trio of Romeo, Joseph Walsh, and Robert Crocitto all cracked consecutive RBI hits, making it a 13-0 lead.

Tim Walsh collected his first win of the year for Old Westbury allowing three runs on eight hits and struck out five in six innings of work.

KEAN COUGARS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury returns to the diamond on Tuesday (March 26) at 3 p.m. when they travel to Union, New Jersey to take on the #8-nationally ranked Kean Cougars at Jim Hynes Baseball Stadium.
