OLD WESTBURY, NY (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) - The SUNY College at Old Westbury men's basketball dropped its Skyline Conference home opener on Saturday afternoon with an 84-65 loss to the Purchase Panthers from Clark Athletic Center.  With the loss, Old Westbury moves to 0-7 on the season and 0-2 in the conference play, while Purchase improved to 1-7 and 1-0, respectively.    

Both teams held a brief share of the lead in the games opening minutes until a 7-0 Purchase run from 14:40 to 11:18 allowed the visitors to grab an 11-7 edge.  Old Westbury drew even at 14, as Kaleem Edwards nabbed a steal at half court before driving to the hole for a one-handed dunk with 9:26 remaining.  Jose Reyes connected on a three ball at 9:02 to put Purchase up for good.  Nicholas Jackson nabbed a steal and drained a half-court shot as time expired to put Purchase up by nine points for a 35-26 advantage at the break.

Old Westbury trimmed its deficit to five before Mark Gjonlekaj knocked down a three pointer followed by a pair of Edwards' made free throws to knot the game at 48 with 10:46 to go.  Purchase answered with a 23-3 run stretching from 10:14 to 3:17 as Creig Graves contributed eight of those points to build a 20-point lead (71-51).  Jaquan Potter netted a pair of free throws to spark a 10-5 run, capped by Potter's triple at 2:08 to make it a 14-point game (72-58).  Stephon Odle sank a pair of free throws with 1:22 remaining to once again pull Old Westbury within 14 points.  Purchase closed out the final 1:20 with a 7-2 run to secure the road victory. 

Potter paced Old Westbury with 18 points, including 4-of-9 from three-point range.  Edwards followed with 13 points (5-9 FG), five rebounds, four assists, two steals and one blocked shot.  Gjonlekaj added 12 points, eight rebounds, two steals and one block.  Justin Mize chipped in with career-highs of nine points and eight rebounds (four offensive).    

Purchase had registered a trio of 20-point scorers, led by Graves' game-high 26 (7-14 FG, 4-7 3FG, 8-8 FT) and nine rebounds.  Taylor Foster and Reyes each followed with 21 points, while Foster secured seven rebounds and five assists.  

In the end, Old Westbury connected on 30.6 percent from the field (22-72), 26.3 percent from three-point territory (5-19) and 53.3 percent from the free-throw line (16-30) while Purchase knocked down 41.3 percent from the floor (19-46), 40.9 percent from beyond the arc (9-22) and 71.2 percent from the charity stripe (37-52).  Old Westbury had the edge in assists (13-12) while Purchase won the boards battle, 47-42, and also held the advantage in blocked shots (7-2) and steals (9-7).  Old Westbury scored 21 second-chance points off 19 offensive rebounds. 

ST. JOHN FISHER CARDINALS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury returns to the court next on December 29 in Rochester, New York for the opening game of the St. John Fisher College Tournament against the host Cardinals at 8 p.m. from Bobby Wanzer Court.
