HICKSVILLE, NY --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) The SUNY Old Westbury baseball program volunteered at the Special Olympics Long Island Fall Classic September 25-26 at Cantiague Park in Hicksville, New York.

"It was a fantastic opportunity to experience true joy with these truly inspiring athletes," said SUNY Old Westbury head baseball coach Rod Stephan.

For the fifth straight year, Stephan held the position of softball tournament director. Stephan, assistant coaches Chris Smith and Mike Atan, and Old Westbury's baseball student-athletes enjoyed positive interaction with Special Olympics New York's dedicated and enthusiastic throng of athletes, coaches, volunteers and fans.

The student-athletes were responsible for helping run the event, set up and break down, keep score during competition, stage athletes and help with the opening and closing ceremonies. Old Westbury also assisted with the set up and breakdown for bocce, cross country, golf and soccer competitions.

Stephan was also joined by SUNY Old Westbury's director of athletics Lenore J. Walsh, who gave opening remarks as a guest speaker during the opening ceremony.

"Being associated with Special Olympics is a great honor and we look forward to collaborating on future events," said Walsh.

Over 400 athletes participated in the 2015 Fall Classic competing in the five above mentioned sports as well as various skills competitions.
