@OW_Panthers Baseball rallies past Baruch to push win streak to six

Tommy Ziegen’s eighth-inning single scored Michael Cardino for the game-winning run

BROOKLYN - (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) - SUNY Old Westbury baseball extended its win streak to six games after rallying past the Baruch Bearcats on Tuesday afternoon from MCU Park in Brooklyn.  The win advances Old Westbury to 6-2 while Baruch moved to 3-10.

Baruch displayed their power early with a pair of two-out home runs to take a 3-0 lead at the end of three innings.  Angel Tejeda clubbed a two-run homer in the opening frame and Jasdeep Buttar cracked a solo shot in the third off starter Tyler Kapela for the early advantage.

Old Westbury's offense struggled in the early going as Nick Yip's one-out single in the first inning was the Panthers lone hit through six innings.  The Panthers finally broke through in the sixth when Jacob Coners advanced home off a failed pickoff attempt, and throwing error by second baseman Matthew Ballone, to make it a 3-1 game.

Old Westbury's momentum carried into the following inning with a leadoff triple by Michael Cardino.  Two batters later, Tommy Ziegen's RBI single scored Cardino to slice the deficit to one run.  Coners then delivered a two-run double for Old Westbury's first lead of the game, 4-3.

Cardino and Jesse Matos stroked back-to-back two-out singles in the eighth to set the plate for Ziegen, who provided the game-winning single that scored Cardino for a 5-3 lead.

Vinny Bieniek fanned his first-two batters faced in the bottom of the ninth, and two batters later allowed an RBI single to Baruch's Eric Ulino to make it a 5-4 game.  Bieniek regained his composure and blew a swinging-third strike past Buttar to earn his first-career save.

Kapela struck out three and did not factor into the decision after working four innings on the mound.  Caleb Olesen (2-0) tossed four innings in relief of Kapela to record his second win of the season.  He struck out a career-high five batters while scattering three hits.

Despite registering six strikeouts, Baruch starter Zachary Uher (0-3) was pinned with the loss as he surrendered four runs (three earned) on four hits and four walks in 6.1 innings of mound work.  Bogdan Leyton closed out the final 2.2 innings in relief of Uher, and allowed the RBI single to Ziegen in the eighth inning.

Yip (2-5, SB), Cardino (2-4, 2 R) and Ziegen (2-4, 2 RBI, R) each produced multi-hit games to lead Old Westbury's offense.  Cardino is currently enjoying a career-best seven-game hitting streak while Ziegen extended his personal-best streak to five games.

Ballone (2-5, R), Buttar (2-4, 2 R, RBI, BB) and Uher (2-4) contributed multi-hit efforts for the Bearcats as Baruch finished with a 9-8 edge in hits.
