@OW_Panthers Baseball sweeps Yeshiva for pair of conference wins

Old Westbury continues Skyline Conference road play Sunday (Apr. 19) at Mount Saint Mary

PALISADES PARK, NJ (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) - SUNY Old Westbury baseball captured 16-6 and 17-0 Skyline Conference road wins from the Yeshiva Maccabees Friday afternoon from Overpeck Park in Palisades Park, New Jersey.  Old Westbury (15-8) advances to 6-4 in conference play as Yeshiva (0-12) moved to 0-10.

Game One: Old Westbury 16, Yeshiva 6
Eddie Hernandez (1-for-2, R, BB) singled to lead off the game, which extended his hitting streak to nine games.  He then stole second, advanced to third on Nick Yip's (1-for-2, R) ground out and scored off Dean Sheridan's (1-for-4, 2 RBI, R) sacrifice fly for the game's initial run off Yeshiva starting right-hander Tani Pollack (0-2, 6 IP, 10 H, 12 R, 8 ER, 4 BB, 3 K).

Panther starting right-hander Justin Mize (1-0, 5 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 5 K) sat down the Maccabees one-two-three in the opening inning on his way to record his first-career win.  Mize closed out the first inning with one of his career-best five strikeouts on the day.

Jacob Coners (0-for-1, 2 R, 2 SB, BB) doubled the Panthers' advantage after coming around to score off a passed ball by catcher Shmuli Goldis (3-for-4, 2 RBI, R) for a 2-0 lead.  Coners was hit by Pollack's pitch to reach base, and then stole second and third before scoring.  Two batters later, Joey Walsh singled and stole second before Peter Falgiano's (2-for-4, RBI, R) RBI single made it a three-run game.

Old Westbury tacked on three more runs in the third before Mize walked Josh Gurin to score Goldis to put Yeshiva on the board in the fourth.

Tommy Ziegen's (3-for-4, 3 R, 2 RBI) triple led off the fifth for Old Westbury.  Two batters later, Ziegen scored on a throwing error by Goldis.  Walsh then followed with a sacrifice fly to score Jonathan Pagan for the eventual game-winning run, which put the Panthers ahead, 7-1.

Goldis drove in Joseph Bankier (2-for-3, 2 R) with an RBI single in the fifth off Mize to make it a 7-2 contest.

Old Westbury answered with four-run frames in the sixth and seventh to secure the run-rule victory.

Right-handed reliever Carlos Solorzano took over for Mize in the sixth and surrendered four runs on five hits and one walk.  Righty James DeSantis worked a hitless seventh to preserve the Panthers' win.

Game Two: Old Westbury 17, Yeshiva 0
Jessie Matos (1-for-4, RBI, R, BB, 2 SB) opened game two's scoring in the second inning by reaching on a fielding error by second baseman Aryeh Rosenfield.  Matos then stole second and third before Michael Gismondi singled him home for a 1-0 lead to score the eventual game-winning run.

Old Westbury scored two more in the third with Yip's (1-for-2, 2 RBI, R) run-scoring sacrifice fly and Gismondi's RBI single to make it 3-0.

The Panthers erupted for five runs in the fourth, two in the fifth, six in the sixth and tacked on one more in the seventh for the 17-0 decision.

Jake Schwartz (3-for-4, 3 R, RBI, BB) and Brandon Stein each produced RBI triples before Robinson Hernandez launched his first-career home run in the sixth.  Ziegen (3-for-4, 4 RBI, 2 R, BB, 4 SB) also added his team-leading eighth multi-hit game of the season.

Old Westbury starting left-hander Nick Schoen racked up nine of his career-best 13 strikeouts through four innings en route to recording his first-career shutout win.  Schoen improved his record to 3-2 on the season after scattering four hits through seven innings while handing out two walks.

Jacob Henry (0-1, 2.2 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 4 BB) took Yeshiva's loss.
