@OW_Panthers Women’s Basketball tops York to win third straight

Old Westbury collected a 72-45 wire-to-wire victory Friday in non-conference road action

JAMAICA, NY --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury women's basketball is headed into the 2017 calendar with a three-game win streak after collecting a 72-45 non-conference road victory over the York College Cardinals (1-10) in Jamaica, New York.   

The Panthers (7-2) jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead 42 seconds in to put the game away.  With 7:18 left in the first period, Jasmine Robinson laid-in two points to grow Old Westbury's lead to double-digits (13-2).  Old Westbury would go up by as many as 22 points (31-9) in the first-half off a pair of made free-throws by Charlotte Renker with 7:44 left in the second quarter.  Robinson's 3-point play with 12 seconds remaining sent a 43-23 game into intermission. 

With 4:51 showing on the third-quarter clock, Renker's layup extended Old Westbury's lead to a game-high 30 points (57-27). 
 
Ruth Vargas' 17 points led Old Westbury in scoring while contributing seven rebounds, three steals and one block to her statline.  Renker finished with 13 points (5-10 FG), 12 rebounds (9 offensive), two steals and one block to post her third double-double of the season.  Robinson added nine points and four steals as Tyra Bellings chipped in with three steals. 
 
Evanda Redwood paced York with 17 points and Mayan Charles grabbed a game-high 17 rebounds. 

In the end, Old Westbury connected on 33.3 percent (26-of-78) from the field, 16.7 percent (2-of-12) from three-point range and 69.2 percent (18-of-26) from the free-throw line.  By comparison, York hit on 25 percent (14-of-56) from the floor, 15 percent (3-of-20) from beyond the arc and 60.9 percent (14-of-23) from the charity stripe.  Old Westbury won the boards battle, 59-40, scoring 20 second-chance points off 27 offensive rebounds.  The Panthers held the advantage in blocks (5-3), steals (20-10) and assists (15-6).  Old Westbury also converted 32 Cardinal turnovers into 23 points.  

ST. JOSEPH'S COLLEGE (BROOKLYN) BEARS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury closes out its four-game road trip Wednesday (Jan. 4) in Brooklyn, New York with a Skyline Conference showdown versus the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) Bears (4-6, 2-2 Skyline) inside The Hill Center.
