Ziegen powers @OW_Panthers Baseball to sweep Baruch

Tommy Ziegen collected his seventh career three-hit game in Old Westbury’s game two shutout

YAPHANK, NY --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury baseball swept its doubleheader against the Baruch Bearcats (0-2) in non-conference action Saturday afternoon at Baseball Heaven.  The Panthers (3-1) won the opener, 7-1, and claimed the 12-0 shutout to win the second half of the twinbill.

Kevin Lao (2-for-3, 2 R) unleashed a two-out solo home run in the bottom of the first to give the Panthers an early lead in game one.  Joey Walsh's two-out single drove in Paul Rapoli (1-for-3, 2B-RBI, 2 R) in the second inning for the eventual game-winning run to give Old Westbury a 2-0 advantage.

Old Westbury scored four more in the fifth before Michael Cardino (3-for-4, 2 RBI) singled home his second run of the game to close out the scoring in the seventh.

Panther starter Daniel Aguilo (1-1) tossed a one hitter with nine strikeouts and two walks in six innings of work.  Aguilo took a no-hitter into the sixth, where he surrendered a RBI double to Matthew Ballone for Baruch's lone run.  Nick Dorcean tossed a perfect seventh inning to preserve Old Westbury's one-hitter.

Cameron Kitt (0-1) was charged with six runs (two earned) on eight hits and five walks in 4.2 innings to take the loss for Baruch.

Old Westbury jumped ahead early with Dean Sheridan's two-run double in the first inning to score Jesse Russo (2-of-3, 2 R, 2 SB) and Tommy Ziegen (3-for-3, 2 HR, 4 RBI, 4 R, BB, 2 SB) for the game-winning runs.  Three batters later, Sheridan came around to score off a throwing error by catcher Sean McNamara.

Following back-to-back singles by Walsh and Russo to lead off the second, Ziegen singled home Walsh to make it a 4-0 game.  Russo would score two batters later off a throwing error by second baseman Ballone.  Cardino's two-run single scored Ziegen and Lao to put the game out of reach for a 7-0 lead at the end of two frames.

Ziegen cracked a solo home run in the fourth and followed in the fifth with a two-run shot for Old Westbury's 12-0 lead.  Tyler Roberts lined a RBI triple and Daniel Svenelid roped a RBI double to contribute to the four-run fifth.

Panther starter Danny D'Onofrio (1-0) fanned four batters (one walk) in five innings of four-hit ball before Trey Pizzutello scattered two hits and struck out two in securing Old Westbury's first shutout of the season.
