@OW_Panthers Women’s Volleyball opens season at Saint Elizabeth tri-match

Old Westbury returns to campus to take on CCNY in Tueday's (Sept. 6) home opener

MORRISTOWN, NJ --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury women's volleyball opened the 2016 season Saturday with a tri-match on the road against the host Saint Elizabeth Eagles (1-2) and the Pratt Institute Cannoneers (3-0) from Saint Joseph Hall in Morristown, New Jersey.  Old Westbury dropped both matches by a 3-0 scoreline to Pratt (25-14, 25-14, 25-16) and Saint Elizabeth (25-10, 25-17, 25-19). 

In the opener versus Pratt, Sofia Goris dished out a career-best 11 assists to go with six digs and one ace in leading the Panthers.  Shanayia Lloyd hit a team-leading .333, totaling four kills on nine swings.  Ruth Vargas nailed down five kills and added five solo blocks and four block assists.   

Marlena Todd registered a match-high 13 kills as Pratt hit .282 compared to Old Westbury's .073.

Against Saint Elizabeth, Goris and Alicia Gewirtz both handed out five assists to move the Panthers' offense.  Vargas contributed seven kills, three aces, six solo blocks and two block assists to her statline.  Goris added seven digs and two aces, while Brittany Buchanan served one ace. 

Old Westbury finished the match hitting .102 compared to a .086 showing by Saint Elizabeth.  Nicole Morera captained the Eagles' offense with 24 assists while Kiana Cunningham served six of the team's 25 aces.   

CCNY BEAVERS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury returns to campus Tuesday (Sept. 6) for its home opener against the CCNY Beavers in non-conference action at 6 p.m. inside Clark Athletic Center.
