@OW_Panthers Women’s Basketball holds on for 55-43 win at USMMA

Old Westbury returns home Saturday (Jan. 28) for a rematch of the 2016 Skyline Conference Championship versus Sage

KINGS POINT, NY --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury women's basketball collected a 55-43 Skyline Conference road victory Wednesday evening over the United States Merchant Marine Academy Mariners (8-7, 4-6 Skyline) inside Liebertz Gymnasium.

Kaleigh D'Arcy's layup opened the scoring book 1:01 in to give USMMA to early lead.  Jasmine Robinson then scored seven unanswered points to give Old Westbury (13-3, 6-3 Skyline) the lead for good (7-2) with four minutes remaining in the first quarter.  USMMA's Rachel Wehlburg knocked down a pair of free-throws before Tori Bellings answered for the Panthers with a jumper to closed out the quarter with a 9-4 advantage.  With 9:04 showing on the second-quarter clock, Gabrielle Salazar's free-throw sliced the USMMA deficit to four (9-5).  Bridgid McNeill's layup sparked an 11-1 run from 8:44 to 3:15 to push Old Westbury's lead to double digits (21-6).  Tori Bellings later dropped in a layup with 38 seconds left to extend the lead to a first-half high 17 points (27-10) before heading into intermission with a 16-point cushion (27-11).

Old Westbury put together a 14-1 run from 9:20 to 3:09 to extend lead to a game-high 30 points (42-12) in the third stanza.  The fourth quarter saw USMMA outscore Old Westbury by 15 (26-11) as the Mariners trimmed their 26-point deficit to 12 to settle the 55-43 final.

Robinson finished with 14 points (6-of-11 FG, 2-of-4 3FG) and five rebounds to pace Old Westbury.  Tyra Bellings chipped in nine points (4-of-6 FG) and four rebounds off the bench as .  Renker contributed a game-high four blocks (tied career-high).  Monique Joseph and Ruth Vargas nabbed four and three steals, respectively.  McNeill pulled-down a team-best eight boards.  

D'Arcy led all scorers with 18 points (7-of-14 FG) to go along with eight rebounds and three steals.  Hightower totaled nine points, six rebounds (four offensive) and two steals.  Shelby Peters grabbed a game-high nine rebounds to go along with four steals.

In the end, Old Westbury connected on 40.4 percent (21-of-52) from the field, 50 percent (3-of-6) from 3-point range and 55.6 percent (10-of-18) from the free-throw line.  By comparison, USMMA hit on 20.9 percent (14-of-67) from the floor, 14.3 percent (1-of-7) from beyond the arc and 58.3 percent (14-of-24) from the charity stripe.  Old Westbury won the boards battle, 50-43, scoring 10 second-chance points off 15 offensive rebounds.  USMMA held the advantage in steals (15-11), blocks (6-5) while the Panthers held the advantage in assists (12-7).  The Panthers scored 11 points off 20 Mariner turnovers.
