@OW_Panthers Men’s Basketball prevails with 68-62 win over Mount Saint Vincent

Old Westbury returned to Skyline Conference play with Thursday’s home win

OLD WESTBURY, NY --- 
(www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury men's basketball opened the 2017 portion of the schedule with a 68-62 Skyline Conference home win over the College of Mount Saint Vincent Dolphins (2-9, 0-3 Skyline) Thursday evening inside Clark Athletic Center.
 
Andrew Curiel's layup sparked a 12-2 run to give Mount Saint Vincent a 17-8 advantage for its largest lead of the game with 13:32 remaining in the opening half.  Brandon Thomson sank a free throw with 8:51 showing on the first-half clock to kick-start Old Westbury's (5-6, 2-1 Skyline) 8-2 run to tie the game at 24.  Both teams battled for the upper hand down the stretch before a jumper by Terrin Roland sent Old Westbury into intermission with a 33-32 lead.

Mount Saint Vincent tied the game at 46 with 11:03 left in the second half off a 3-pointer by Ramiel Coleman.  Thomson then scored five-straight points to put the Panthers up 51-46.  Old Westbury took its largest lead of the night with 4:39 remaining off a triple by Lylle Ryals to make it a 61-53 game.  The Dolphins answered with a 9-0 run to take a brief 62-61 advantage.  Stephon Odle then connected from deep to give the Panthers the lead for good (64-62) as part of Old Westbury's 7-0 run to close out the final 1:10.

Thomson finished with a career-high 15 points (5-of-8 FG, 2-of-4 3FG) as Ryals chipped in with 15 points to pace the Panthers.  Jamail Stanley scored 14 points to go along with game-highs of 14 rebounds, five assists and four blocks to record his eighth double-double of the season.  Odle finished with eight points (2-for-4 3FG) and three steals.

Nick Nemergut led the Dolphins with 13 points (3-of-7 3FG) while Ammad Alkhulaidi contributed 12 points, 12 rebounds, three assists and two blocks.

In the end, Old Westbury connected on 32.8 percent (20-of-61) from the field, 34.6 percent (9-of-26) from three-point range and 79.2 percent (19-of-24) from the free-throw line.  By comparison, Mount Saint Vincent hit on 36.9 percent (24-of-65) from the floor, 40 percent (10-of-25) from beyond the arc and 33.3 percent (4-of-12) from the charity stripe.  Both teams grabbed 45 rebounds as Old Westbury scored 10 second-chance points off 10 offensive boards.  Old Westbury held the advantage in blocks (7-3) and steals (8-3) while converting 18 Dolphin turnovers into 10 points.
