@OW_Panthers Women’s Basketball clamps down in second half to top USMMA, 64-51

Old Westbury returns to the road Saturday (Dec. 9) for a non-conference showdown versus Baruch College

OLD WESTBURY, NY --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury women's basketball opened their home slate Tuesday evening with a 64-51 Skyline Conference win over the United States Merchant Marine Academy Mariners (3-2, 2-1 Skyline) inside Clark Athletic Center.  Old Westbury (6-0, 4-0 Skyline) is off to its best start since opening 5-0 during the 2009-10 season.

Old Westbury jumped out to an early 4-0 advantage with back-to-back Destiny Marino buckets 1:24 in.  Trailing 14-12 in the opening period, Kiana Vegas' jumper with 1:57 left ignited a 7-0 run that closed out the quarter for the Mariners 19-14 lead heading into the second stanza.  Kaleigh D'Arcy opened the second-quarter scoring with a jumper to push USMMA's lead to seven (21-14) with 8:47 left.  The Panthers continued to play catch up for the remainder of the half and used a 9-3 run to slice their deficit to one (24-23) off a Davida Warren free throw with 1:01 showing on the second-quarter clock.  The Mariners held a slim 27-26 lead at the half due in part to forcing Old Westbury's hand into committing 12 turnovers.

Alessia Drevnyak's layup 19 seconds into second-half play put Old Westbury ahead (28-27) for the first time since leading 14-12 with 2:17 remaining in the first quarter.  Old Westbury took a six-point advantage (37-31) with 4:27 left in the third period as Marino's layup finished a run from Tori Bellings.  The Panthers maintained their lead for the final 19:41 of play with a 10-3 run to help build a nine point lead (54-44) with 5:48 remaining.  Tyra Bellings' triple with 18 seconds left grew Old Westbury's lead to a game-high 13 points (64-51) to settle the scoring.

Monique Joseph paced Old Westbury with 14 points (7-of-16 FG), nine rebounds and four steals.  Marino and Tori Bellings followed with 11 points while Drevnyak contributed career highs of nine points (4-of-6 FG), nine rebounds, two blocks and one steal off the bench.  Charlotte Renker grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds and added two blocks and two steals.  Bridgid McNeill also swatted two shots and Tori Bellings dished out four assists.  

USMMA was led by Tichina Carmon's game-high 18 points and 12 from Kiana Vega.  D'Arcy added nine points and four steals.    

In the end, Old Westbury connected on 43.8 percent (28-of-64) from the field, 11.1 percent (1-of-9) from 3-point range and 50 percent (7-of-14) from the free-throw line.  By comparison, USMMA on hit 30.8 percent (20-of-65) from the floor, 0-for-9 from beyond the arc and 55 percent (11-of-20) from the charity stripe.  Old Westbury won the boards battle, 54-35, while scoring 23 second-chance points off 20 offensive rebounds.  The Panthers scored 19 points off 15 Mariner miscues.   Old Westbury also held the advantage in blocks (8-3), bench points (21-6), points in the paint (46-26) and fastbreak points (16-4).  Both teams drew even in steals (9-9) as USMMA distributed 14 assists compared to Old Westbury's 13.
