@OW_Panthers Women’s Basketball pulls away from Mount Saint Vincent to advance to Skyline Conference Championship Saturday

Old Westbury advanced to its second-straight Skyline Conference Championship game Saturday with Thursday’s 71-57 win


OLD WESTBURY, NY --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Westbury women's basketball is headed to Saturday's Skyline Conference Championship game for the second-straight year after collecting a 71-57 semifinal-round home win Thursday evening over the fourth-seeded College of Mount Saint Vincent Dolphins (18-9).  The top-seeded Panthers (23-3) will host No. 3 The Sage Colleges Gators (19-8) inside Clark Athletic Center at 2 p.m. in a rematch of the 2016 title game.  Admission for Saturday's championship game will be $5, and students/faculty/staff with valid Old Westbury or Sage school ID receive free entry.  Live stats for Saturday's championship matchup will be available by visiting www.oldwestburypanthers.com/coverage.aspx.

After Mount Saint Vincent scored first, Charlotte Renker netted the game's next-four points to put Old Westbury ahead as part of an 8-1 run from 9:32 to 5:57 to go up 8-3.   Christina Barone knocked down a triple for Mount Saint Vincent as the Dolphins scored nine of the 14 points to trim the deficit to one (13-12) to close out the quarter.  Mount Saint Vincent took a brief 14-13 lead to open the second period.  Renker answered with a layup 11 seconds later to give Old Westbury the lead for good (15-14) at the same time as igniting a 17-7 run to take a 30-21 lead.  The Dolphins made it a six-point game (30-24) with 45 seconds left before Old Westbury scored five-unanswered points to take a 35-24 lead into intermission.

Mount Saint Vincent pulled within seven points (37-30) early in the third quarter before Jasmine Robinson connected from deep to kick-start a 13-6 Panther run that pushed the lead to 14 (50-36) with 1:37 left.  Kristen Merrell scored four points in the final 44 seconds close Mount Saint Vincent's gap to 10 (50-40).  The Dolphins would get as close as seven (55-48) with 6:46 remaining in the fourth quarter, but Old Westbury proved to be too much as a 12-2 run from 5:58 to 2:01 extended the lead to a game-high 17 points (67-50).

Renker finished with a career-high 17 rebounds (eight offensive) to go with 13 points (5-of-5 FT), four blocks and two steals to register her 11th career double-double.  Robinson contributed 20 points (6-of-14 FG, 7-of-10 FT), two steals and one block.  Ruth Vargas followed with 16 points, nine rebounds (five offensive) and four steals as Monique Joseph grabbed a career-high 15 rebounds (tied career-high 8 offensive) and added five assists and two steals to her statline.

Barone paced Mount Saint Vincent with 20 points (9-of-13 FG, 2-of-4 3FG), six rebounds, two blocks and one steal.  Merrell chipped in 13 points (6-of-13 FG), six rebounds and game-high five steals.

In the end, Old Westbury connected on 31.4 percent (22-of-70) from the field, 26.7 percent (4-of-15) from 3-point range and 60.5 percent (23-of-38) from the free-throw line.  By comparison, Mount Saint Vincent hit on 33.8 percent (24-of-71) from the floor, 15.4 percent (4-of-26) from beyond the arc and 45.5 percent (5-of-11) from the charity stripe.  Old Westbury won the boards battle, 69-39, while scoring 17 second-chance points off 31 offensive rebounds.  Both teams drew even in steals (14-14) while the Panthers held the advantage in blocks (6-2) and assists (13-11).  The Dolphins scored 29 points off 26 Panther turnovers.
