@OW_Panthers Baseball splits twinbill with Scranton

Old Westbury pitched a gem in Wednesday’s finale to capture the 3-2 win

FORT MYERS, FL --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury baseball dropped a 12-4 decision before picking a 3-2 win in the finale to salvage a non-conference split with the University of Scranton Royals (9-5) Wednesday afternoon at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic in Fort Myers, Florida. 

Game 1: Scranton 12, Old Westbury 4
Trailing 7-0, Jesse Matos (2-for-3) kept the fourth inning alive with a two-out single off Royal starter Casey Jacobson (W, 1-0; 5 IP, 4 H, 3 R, BB, 5 K) to drive in Louis Sileno and Paul Rapoli to put Old Westbury on the board.

In the fifth, Sileno lifted a sacrifice fly out to left field to score David Hawley (1-for-4, 2 SB) to make it an 8-3 game.

Jesse Russo (2-for-4) slapped a RBI single to right field to score Nick Cordero in the sixth inning to settle the 12-4 final. 

Panther starter Adam Heidenfelder (L, 1-1; 8 H, 2 BB, 3 K) was tagged with the loss after surrendering seven runs (four earned) in 3.2 innings of work. 

Game 2: Old Westbury 3, Scranton 2
Threatening with runners at the corners in the second, Justin Van Steelant (2-for-4) tapped a grounder to first base to score Sean Haveron for the unearned run on Panther starter Christian Tessitore (W, 1-0; 6 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 8 K). 

The Royals doubled its advantage on Tessitore in the third with Haveron's RBI single to score Michael Ratner for their second unearned run. 

Old Westbury answered in the fourth inning with three runs on two hits and a costly error to take the lead for good on Scranton starter Bobby Hegarty (L, 1-0; 3.1 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 3 BB).  Gianni Carbone's sacrifice fly drove in Sileno (3-for-4) for Old Westbury's initial run.  Two batters later, Matos delivered the game-winning two-run single to score Sheridan and Lao for the 3-2 final. 

Vinny Negri (1 IP, 1 H) relieved Tessitore in the seventh to earn his first-career save.  

ILLINOIS COLLEGE BLUEBOYS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury continues play Thursday morning in Fort Myers, Florida at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic with a non-conference showdown against the Illinois College Blueboys (2-5) at 9 a.m. from Terry Park Sports Complex No. 1.
