@OW_Panthers Baseball battles Maritime in Skyline doubleheader

Old Westbury remains at home for Tuesday’s non-conference showdown versus Lehman

OLD WESTBURY, NY --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury baseball hosted the SUNY Maritime Privateers (9-6, 4-0 Skyline) for a Skyline Conference doubleheader Sunday afternoon inside Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex.  Old Westbury (9-8, 2-2 Skyline) fell 10-4 in the opener before the Privateers completed the sweep with a 5-4 win.

Game 1: Maritime 10, Old Westbury 4
Maritime struck first with a trio of first inning singles to take the early lead on Panther starter Adam Heidenfelder (L, 0-3; 5 IP, 5 R, 9 H, BB, 4 K).  Aaron Schiavoni (3-for-4, 3 RBI, R) drove a two-out single to left center to score Stephen Semler (2-for-4, 4 R) for the game's initial run.

Old Westbury evened the score in the fifth inning as Kevin Lao (2-for-4, R) hit a leadoff triple off Privateer starter Travis Bruinsma (W, 4-0; 9 IP, 4 R, 10 H, 0 BB, 8 K) before scoring two batters later on an infielder grounder by Carlos Balmaceda.

Heidenfelder settled down to allow just two base runners over the next four innings.  Maritime put together three-straight singles to lead off a four-run sixth.  Heidenfelder then dealt a bases loaded walk to Schiavoni that allowed Chris Deddo to score the go-ahead run.  Phil Russo then singled through the right side to score two before Conor Alwan followed with a RBI single to end Heidenfelder's outing.

Old Westbury answered in the sixth with one run to slice the deficit to three (5-2).  Tommy Ziegen (2-for-4, 2 R) drove a leadoff double to left center and scored two batters later on a sacrifice grounder by Dean Sheridan.

Maritime plated two runs in the seventh off Panther reliever Daniel Aguilo (4 IP, 5 R, 6 H, 2 BB, 3 K) to take a 7-2 lead.

Old Westbury responded in the bottom of the frame with back-to-back singles and a sacrifice hit by Jesse Matos to score Paul Rapoli to make it a 7-3 game.

Aguilo gave up two walks and a double before Brian McLaughlin (4-for-5, 4 RBI, 2 R) cleared the bases with a three-run double to deep center field to extend the eighth-inning lead to seven (10-3).

Old Westbury scored for the fourth-straight inning as Ziegen doubled to lead off the eighth.  Ziegen then advanced home off Louis Sileno's RBI single to settle the 10-4 final.

Game 2: Maritime 5, Old Westbury 4
Maritime jumped ahead first with McLaughlin's RBI double in the opening frame off Panther starter Christian Tessitore (ND, 5 IP, R, 3 H, 0 BB, 4 K).

Jesse Russo led off the Panthers' first with a single, then stole second and third before advancing home on a throwing error by Schiavoni to tie the game.

Old Westbury took a 3-1 lead on Privateer starter A.J. Ammirati (0-1) with Russo's RBI single and a sacrifice fly by Ziegen to score Russo.

Russo set the plate with a double in the fifth inning and scored two batters later off Ziegen's sacrifice fly to make it a 4-1 game.

Old Westbury committed three- straight fielding errors as part of Maritime's four-run sixth off Panther reliever James English (L, 0-1; 2 IP, 2 H, 4 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, K).  McLaughlin drilled a two-run double to right center before Schiavoni and Russo lifted back-to-back sacrifice flies to give the Privateers a 5-4 lead.
Russo and Liam Slattery both singled off Privateer reliever Skylar Graff (W, 1-0; 2 IP, 3 H, K) to open the seventh frame.  Graff then retired the next two batters to escape out of the jam to earn Maritime's win.

LEHMAN COLLEGE LIGHTNING UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury remains at home Tuesday (Mar. 28) at 4 p.m. against the Lehman College Lightning in non-conference action inside Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex.
