@OW_Panthers Baseball tops Western New England in come-from-behind series opening win

Old Westbury collected a 10-9 win in extra innings to take the opener versus Western New England

YAPHANK, NY --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury baseball picked up a 10-9 win in extra innings to take the series opener before falling 2-0 in the finale Sunday afternoon to the Western New England University Golden Bears (1-1) from Baseball Heaven in Yaphank, New York.

Game 1 (9 Inn.): Old Westbury 10, Western New England 9
The Golden Bears jumped ahead early with two runs in the opening frame off Panther starter Adam Heidenfelder (ND, 2 IP, 2 R, 2 H, 3 BB).  Daniel Morin (3-for-6, RBI, R) doubled home Erik Lacaire (3-for-5, 3 R, RBI) for the initial run before Jared Rosenblatt (2-for-4, 2 RBI, BB, SB) made it a 2-0 game with a sacrifice fly.

Old Westbury answered in the home half of the first off Golden Bears' starter Bob Hamel (ND, 4.2 IP, 3 R, 2 ER, 6 H, BB, 6 K) with an infield grounder by Kevin Lao that scored David Hawley (2-for-4, 4 R, 2 SB, BB) to slice the Panthers deficit in half.  Hawley and Tommy Ziegen (3-for-4, 3 RBI, R, BB, SB) pulled off a successful double steal to set the plate for Lao.

Western New England took a 3-1 lead in the third with an unearned run off Panther reliever Christian Tessitore.

Old Westbury put together a two-out rally in the fifth with a run-scoring single by Ziegen followed by Lao's RBI double to tie the game.

The Golden Bears capitalized on a trio of passed balls in addition to three walks to score three runs off reliever James English in the sixth to double their advantage (6-3).

Reliever Matt Thomas allowed three two-out runs in a wild sixth inning that saw him walk two and hit one Panther to load the bases for Ziegen, who tied the game with a three-run triple.

Aaron Rios broke a 6-6 tie with a two-run single off Panther reliever Jason Espinal (W, 1-0; 3 IP, 5 H, 3 R, ER, 4 BB, 3 K) to take an 8-6 lead in the seventh.

Old Westbury replied in the bottom of the seventh with two runs off reliever Jacques Boilard to send an 8-8 game into extra innings.  The Panthers put together another two-out rally as Carlos Balmaceda doubled home Paul Rapoli (3-for-5, 2 R) before Louis Sileno pinch hit to produce Old Westbury's third-straight double to drive in Balmaceda.

Western New England took the lead in the eighth off Espinal with a two-out double by Lacaire to score Steve Rivela.

Old Westbury led off the eighth with back-to-back singles by Hawley and Ziegen off reliever Liam Davey.  Two batters later, Dean Sheridan singled up the middle to score Hawley for the game-tying run.

Rapoli singled off reliever Andrew Mulvey (L, 0-1; H, R) to lead off the ninth.  Mulvey then hit Balmaceda with a pitch, followed by a failed pickoff attempt to second and a fielding error by center fielder Lacaire that allowed Rapoli to score the game-winning run.

Game 2: Western New England 2, Old Westbury 0
Rosenblatt stroked a two-out double off Panther starter Trey Pizzutello (L, 1-2; 4 IP, 2 R, 4 H, 5 BB, 5 K) in the first to drive in Lacaire and Ben LaCroix for the early lead.

Old Westbury threatened in the sixth as Jesse Russo worked a one-out walk and stole second. Golden Bear starter Paul Wetmore (W, 1-0; 7 IP, 4 BB, 6 K) settled down and retired his next two batters to escape out of the jam.

Wetmore earned the no-hitter after allowing just five of his 20 batters faced to reach base.

Daniel Aguilo scattered three hits while striking out four (zero walks) in three scoreless frames in relief of Pizzutello.

LEHMAN COLLEGE LIGHTNING UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury (2-3) returns to campus next Saturday (Mar. 11) for a non-conference doubleheader with the Lehman College Lightning in Old Westbury, New York.  First pitch of the home opener is slated for 12 p.m. inside Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex.
