@OW_Panthers Women’s Volleyball volunteers at beach cleanup

Old Westbury student-athletes took to Long Beach to participate in the New York State Beach Cleanup Program

LONG BEACH, NY --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury women's volleyball spent April 28 participating in a clean-up project along the shores of Long Beach organized by the New York State Beach Cleanup program.

Members of the women's volleyball program collected debris and pollutants from a mile stretch of the beach. The beach cleanup prevented further harm to the waters and shore that threatens marine wildlife and insults our aesthetic eye.

"Today was a great opportunity for our student-athletes to give back," said SUNY Old Westbury head women's volleyball coach Rich Borawski. "It is a reminder for our student-athletes that when we mistreat things in our community, everyone is affected.

Borawski, along with women's volleyball student-athletes Kemari Best, Nikia Gardon, Sofia Goris and Shanayia Lloyd participated in the cleanup.

Of the 6,645 volunteers coordinated by the NYS Beach Cleanup in 2016, 66,830.93 pounds of debris were cleaned and documented along 233.68 miles of New York State's shoreline.

Since 1986, the Northeast Chapter of the American Littoral Society has coordinated New York's participation in the International Coastal Cleanup (ICC). This effort has the overarching sponsorship of the Ocean Conservancy in Washington, DC. The cleanup is a worldwide event in which over 100 countries and almost all of our states participate.
