Old Westbury opens its home slate Wednesday (Nov. 28) against York College (NY) after capturing the Dr. Betty Shabazz Tournament title for the third-straight year

BROOKLYN, NY --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury women's basketball captured a 69-55 non-conference victory Sunday afternoon over the Lasell College Lasers (2-4) to win the Dr. Betty Shabazz Tournament championship for the third-straight year from Cougars Cave in Brooklyn.  The Panthers (4-0) open the campaign on a four-game winning streak for the third-consecutive season.

Micah Browne averaged 20.0 points (51.7% FG, 71.4% FT), 6.5 assists, 4.0 rebounds and 2.0 steals in two games to be recognized as the tournament's Most Valuable Player as well as a member of the all-tournament team.  Charlotte Renker contributed 11.5 points (58.8% FG), 11.0 rebounds, 2.5 blocks and 1.5 steals per game to join Browne on the all-tournament team.

Renker's layup six seconds into the opening quarter started a 10-4 Old Westbury run with 4:58 remaining.  Lasell responded with four-consecutive triples that kickstarted a 12-6 spurt during a stretch of 3:54 to knot the game at 16 heading into the second quarter.  Davida Warren's layup ignited an 8-3 Panther run 31 seconds into the stanza to grab a 24-19 lead.  Breanna Muir scored five of Lasell's next seven points over the course of 1:16 of play to give the Lasers their lone lead of the game (27-26).  From there, Old Westbury scored eight-unanswered points over the next 3:08 to take a 34-27 advantage into the break.

The Panthers came out of intermission strong with nine-straight points capped off by Renker's layup with 5:33 remaining in the third period to extend the lead to 16 (43-27).  Defensively, the Panthers picked up the intensity as they refused to forfeit a point until D'Asia Allen sank a pair of free throws with 4:07 left in the stanza to cut the Laser deficit to 14 (43-29).  Playing with a 17-point cushion heading in to the final quarter (53-36), the Panthers opened the period by creating a 10-2 run capped by Alessia Drevnyak's layup to build a game-high 25-point lead (63-38) with 5:06 to play.  Lasell used a 17-6 run to pull within 14 points with four seconds left to settle the 69-55 final.

Renker dominated by scoring 20 points (9-of-14 FG) to go along with a game-high 18 rebounds to post her 31st-career double-double (third of the season).  Browne followed with 18 points (8-of-17 FG) and a game-high six assists to lead Old Westbury.

Allen poured in a game-high 22 points (7-of-14 FG, 6-of-13 3FG) while Muir put together a 19 point (8-of-18 FG) performance to pace Lasell.

In the end, Old Westbury shot 40.8 percent (29-of-71) from the field, 11.1 percent (1-of-9) from long range and 41.7 percent (10-of-24) from the free-throw line while Lasell fired away at 29.4 percent (20-of-68) from the floor, 27.8 percent (10-of-36) from beyond the arc and 71.4 percent (5-of-7) from the charity stripe.  The Panthers finished with a +30 (64-34) rebounding margin while outplaying the Lasers in blocks (5-2), assists (15-11), steals (10-8), points in the paint (52-16), second-chance points (16-5) and points off turnovers (16-8).  Lasell led the way in bench scoring (26-17).
