OLD WESTBURY, NY ---
(www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury men's basketball opened its home slate Saturday afternoon with a 72-65 Skyline Conference victory over the St. Joseph's (L.I.) College Golden Eagles (2-4, 1-2 Skyline) inside Clark Athletic Center.  With the win, the Panthers (2-1, 1-0 Skyline) improve to 3-1 at home when opening conference play against St. Joseph's dating back to the 2008-09 campaign.

The Panthers jumped out to a 10-6 lead on a Inderpal Dhaliwal three pointer at the 14:09 mark.  Moments later, Chase Johnson connected from downtown to ignite a 13-2 Panther run with 10:15 showing on the first-half clock.  Yancy Ulysse's layup closed the outburst at 5:21 to give Old Westbury a 13-point lead (25-12). The Golden Eagles tried to fight back, but instead, the Panthers used a 9-2 run starting at 2:29 featuring a pair of Alan McDonald layups as Old Westbury held a 34-20 lead heading into the break.

Old Westbury stretched its lead to a game-high 19 points (41-22) at the 17:46 mark with two of McDonald's 11 second-half points.  St. Joseph's clawed its way back into the game with an 18-6 run to pull within five (53-48) with 9:38 showing on the clock. McDonald answered with five points during Old Westbury's 8-2 spurt to build a 60-51 lead at 7:14.  The Golden Eagles countered with a 10-2 run to trim their deficit to three (65-62) capped off by Frank Basile's triple with 2:47 remaining. Old Westbury replied with Justin Alleyne-Washington sinking back-to-back jumpers followed by Pedro Marquez's dagger from deep to settle the 72-65 final.

Marquez finished with a career-best 18 points (6-of-9 FG, 5-of-6 3FG).  McDonald followed with 16 points (7-of-12 FG), seven rebounds and a game-high five assists.  Alleyne-Washington chipped in with 11 points while Stanley Baker grabbed a career-high 14 boards.

Basile paced St. Joseph's with a game-high 27 points (10-of-25 FG, 4-of-10 FT), 13 rebounds and two blocks.  Brad Weiss added 15 points (5-of-9 FG, 5-of-8 FT), 11 rebounds and two blocks while Mike Harris poured in 14 points.

Old Westbury shot 35.5 percent (27-of-76) from the field, 36 percent (9-of-25) from beyond the arc and 81.8 percent (9-of-11) from the free-throw line.  St. Joseph's hit 35.3 percent (24-of-68) from the floor, 25.9 percent (7-of-27) from three-point land and 52.6 percent (10-of-19) from the charity stripe.  The Panthers, who scored 22 points off 13 turnovers, converted 14 offensive rebounds into 15 second-chance points. Old Westbury owned the advantage in steals (5-2), assists (15-9), and bench scoring (16-5).  St. Joseph's (L.I.) held the edge in rebounds (52-49), blocks (5-2), points in the paint (30-24) and fast-break points (12-5).
