@OW_Panthers Men’s Basketball wraps up road schedule at St. Joseph’s (Brooklyn)

Old Westbury returns home Saturday (Feb. 17) to close out the regular-season slate with a Skyline Conference Senior Day matchup against United States Merchant Marine Academy

BROOKLYN, NY --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury men's basketball closed out their regular-season road schedule Tuesday evening with a 64-63 Skyline Conference setback to the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) Bears (9-15, 8-11 Skyline) inside The Hill Center in Brooklyn, New York.  Old Westbury (11-13, 10-9 Skyline) had won the last five matchups with the Bears dating back to the 2015-16 season.  Despite the loss, Old Westbury will play as the sixth seed in next week's Skyline Conference Championship.

Dimitri Siraki's jumper broke the scoring ice after one minute of scoreless play to give St. Joseph's the early 2-0 lead.  Alan McDonald responded 50 seconds later with a triple to kickstart Old Westbury's 19-7 run to build a game-high 10-point advantage (19-9) with 13:25 remaining.  Sebastien Etheart laid-in four-straight points to ignite a 7-2 run to pull the Bears within three (21-18) with 8:43 showing on the first-half clock.  The Panthers pushed its lead back to seven (25-18) behind a Stanley Baker jumper and a pair of McDonald free throws with 6:41 left.  St. Joseph's scored seven-unanswered points from 6:24 to 3:53 to tie the game at 25.  Scoreless over the next 2:38, Siraki knocked down a 3-pointer at 1:15 for the Bears' brief lead (28-25) before Terrin Roland answered 16 seconds later with a three of his own to knot the game at 28.  With 30 seconds remaining in the half, Preston Powell buried his second 3-pointer of the game to send the Panthers into intermission with a 31-28 lead.

McDonald finished a three-point play 29 seconds into second-half action to make it a 34-28 game.  Sebastien Etheart's layup at 19:12 started a 13-2 run during a stretch of 4:48 to reclaim the lead (43-36).  Old Westbury chipped away to put together an 8-1 run to tie the game at 44 with 10:42 remaining.  Both teams combined to trade four leads in the final 8:45 of play before Stephane Etheart broke a 63-all tie with the game-winning free-throw with one second left to settle the 64-63 final.

McDonald finished with a team-high 15 points (4-of-5 FT).  Powell followed with 14 points (5-of-10 FG, 2-of-2 FT), five assists (career-high) and two steals.  Yancy Ulysse grabbed 13 rebounds, swatted away a career-best six blocks and nabbed two steals while Roland totaled nine points, seven rebounds and dished out a game-high six assists.

Sebastien Etheart led the way with 16 points (6-of-12 FG) and a game-high 15 rebounds to pace St. Joseph's.  Alec Willis contributed 16 points (5-of-10 FG) while Stephane Etheart added 12 points, nine rebounds and two steals.

In the end, Old Westbury hit on 40 percent (24-of-60) from the floor, 33.3 percent (9-of-27) from beyond the arc and 66.7 percent (6-of-9) from the charity stripe.  By comparison, St. Joseph's connected on 36.1 percent (22-of-61) from the floor, 25 percent (5-of-20) from 3-point range and 78.9 percent (15-of-19) from the free-throw line.  St. Joseph's won the boards battle, 41-39, while scoring 11 second-chance points off 13 offensive rebounds.  Old Westbury scored 18 points off 13 Bear turnovers and held the edge in assists (17-13), blocks (6-2) and fast break points (8-4).  St. Joseph's led the way in bench scoring (13-12).  Both teams were even in steals (7-7) and points in the paint (22-22).

UNITED STATES MERCHANT MARINE ACADEMY MARINERS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury returns home to close out the regular-season slate Saturday (Feb. 17) with a Skyline Conference Senior Day matchup against the United States Merchant Marine Academy Mariners at 12 p.m. inside Clark Athletic Center.  The Panthers have been victorious in two games versus the Mariners since they returned to the Skyline Conference in 2016-17.  Prior to tip-off, seniors Preston Powell (2014-18), Terrin Roland (2016-18), Michael Samuel (2016-18) Khalil Wilson (2016-18) and Darale Young (2017-18) will be honored with the annual senior day ceremony for their dedication to the program.
