@OW_Panthers Baseball claims 7-4 victory at Montclair State

Old Westbury travels to Fort Myers, Florida for the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic (Mar. 17-22)

FLEMINGTON, NJ --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury baseball picked up a 7-4 non-conference road win over the Montclair State University Red Hawks (8-4) Thursday afternoon from Diamond Nation in Flemington, New Jersey.

Old Westbury (3-0-1) collected a pair of first inning singles and a double off Red Hawk starter Connor Lindsay (L, 2-1, 2 IP, 3 R, 2 ER, 4 H, BB, K) before Peter Capel (3-for-5, 3 RBI) roped a two-run double to score Liam Slattery (2-for-2, RBI, 3 BB, 2 R) and John Fogarty (2-for-5, 2 R, SB) for the early 2-0 lead.  

The Panthers added to their lead in the second frame as errors by Montclair State third baseman Joe Norton and shortstop Hayden Reyes advanced David Hawley home to build Old Westbury's lead to three.  

Panther starter Vinny Negri (2 IP, H) tossed two shutout innings and allowed just a two-out double in the second inning.  Alipio Tiburcio took over for Negri in the third, where he surrendered a RBI double to Nick Martinez to make it a 3-1 game.  

Dom Kriegel singled to open the fourth frame and scored four batters later on a Slattery single off Red Hawk reliever Nick Cocchia to take a 4-1 lead.  
In the top of the sixth inning, Jesse Russo (2-for-5, RBI) smacked his second ground-rule double of the game to score Shaun Kaminski for what proved to be the game-winning run as the Panthers jumped ahead, 5-1.

Old Westbury added to its advantage in the eighth inning as a sacrifice fly by John Condon plated home Slattery.  The next batter, Capel, drove a RBI single into left field to score Fogarty to give the Panthers a comfortable 7-1 lead.  

Montclair State tried to mount a comeback by scoring two runs in the final stanza as a run-scoring ground out by Brody Labbe allowed Martinez to cross home plate to settle the 7-4 final.  

The Panther bullpen was charged with four runs and three walks while striking out four in seven innings of work.

NEW YORK UNIVERSITY VIOLETS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury travels to Fort Myers, Florida for the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic (Mar. 17-22) to open Saturday against the New York University Violets at 12 p.m. from Terry Park Sports Complex No. 1.
