Tale of two halves sends @OW_Panthers Men’s Basketball past Sarah Lawrence, 63-51

Old Westbury travels Thursday (Jan. 31) for a Skyline Conference showdown against St. Joseph’s College (L.I.)

OLD WESTBURY, NY --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury men's basketball outscored the Sarah Lawrence College Gryphons (12-8, 10-5 Skyline) by 26 in the second half Tuesday evening to secure a 63-51 Skyline Conference home win inside Clark Athletic Center.  With the win, the Panthers (11-8, 9-5 Skyline) snap Sarah Lawrence's six-game win streak to improve to 9-0 since the Gryphons joined the Skyline Conference in 2014-15.

Both teams traded leads in the early goings before Old Westbury used a 9-2 spurt to take a 12-8 advantage with 10:49 left.  Sarah Lawrence answered with a 22-4 run to go up by 14 (30-16) as Andrew Varoli erupted for 12 key points during the scoring spree.  Nicholas Guimaraes ended the run with a three-pointer with 52 seconds remaining prior to Austin Jones knocking down a triple in the closing seconds to send the Gryphons into intermission with a 33-19 edge.

In the second half, the Panthers scored 12-unanswered points in the opening 5:17 to pull within three (34-31) at the 15:10 mark.  Moments later, Pedro Marquez sank a trio of free throws to give Old Westbury its first lead (49-46) since 9:44 left in the opening stanza.  Playing ahead for the final 6:19, Old Westbury used a 14-3 run to close out the remaining 4:31 to secure the 12-point win.

Marquez finished with a career-high 25 points (8-of-16 FG, 6-of-10 3FG, 3-of-3 FT) to lead all scorers while adding five assists and three steals to his statline.  Alan McDonald used 11 points, 12 rebounds and two steals to post his seventh-career double-double. Chase Johnson and Justin Alleyne-Washington both added eight points to the triumph.  

Enike Anyia paced the Gryphons with 17 points, 12 rebounds and two steals.  Varoli chipped in 15 points (5-of-10 3FG) off the bench.

Old Westbury finished the evening shooting 37.1 percent (23-of-62) from the field, 30 percent (9-of-30) from three-point territory and 80 percent (8-of-10) from the free-throw line.  By comparison, Sarah Lawrence connected on 34.5 percent (19-of-55) from the floor, 35 percent (7-of-20) from long distance and 60 percent (6-of-10) from the charity stripe. The Gryphons won the boards battle, 41-36, scoring 11 second-chance points off 10 offensive rebounds.  Sarah Lawrence outplayed Old Westbury in assists (11-10), bench points (15-9) and points in the paint (22-20). The Panthers held the edge in steals (8-3) and fastbreak points (11-9) while scoring 19 points off 18 Gryphon miscues. Both teams drew even in blocks (1-1).

ST. JOSEPH'S COLLEGE (L.I.) GOLDEN EAGLES UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury travels to Patchogue, New York for a Skyline Conference matchup Thursday (Jan. 31)  against the St. Joseph's College (L.I.) Golden Eagles (5-14, 4-10 Skyline) at 7:30 p.m. inside Danzi Center.  The Panthers will look to sweep the season series for the second-straight year and are 6-2 against St. Joseph's dating back to the 2014-15 campaign.
