Alleyne-Washington shines as Men’s Basketball holds off DeSales for home-opening win

Old Westbury travels to Jamaica, New York next Tuesday (Dec. 10) for a non-conference battle against York College

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com)SUNY Old Westbury men's basketball opened its home slate Saturday afternoons with an 81-76 non-conference victory over the DeSales University Bulldog (3-3) inside Clark Athletic Center.  With the win, the Panthers improve to a 2-4 mark on the young season. 

Old Westbury held a brief 6-5 lead off of Justin Alleyne-Washington's three-pointer with 17:27 left in the opening half.  Timmy Edwards slammed home two points at the 16:20 mark to ignite a 15-9 run for DaSales to claim the 21-14 lead with 10:08 remaining.  Pierrce Perry and Pedro Marquez combined for 14 points as the Panthers erupted with a dominating 29-6 run over the next 9:51 to build the 16-point cushion (43-27). With three seconds left, Matt Kachelries scored the half's final three points for DaSales to send the 43-30 game into the break. 

Kweku Dawson-Amoah laid in two 10 seconds into the second half to trim DaSales' deficit to 11 points, 43-32. The Panthers then stayed in the driver's seat by putting together a 12-4 run, started by an Alleyne-Washington layup at 19:24, to extend the lead to a game-high 19 points (55-36) with 15:48 left.  Old Westbury maintained the double-digit lead over the next 11:44 before Mike Bealer connected from deep that kickstarted a 17-8 Bulldog spurt from 3:54 to four seconds to get in close as three points, 79-76.  Marquez sank a pair of free throws with three seconds left to settle the 81-76 final. 

Alleyne-Washington led the way with a season-high 31 points (10-of-12 FT), to go along with six rebounds.  Marquez followed with 16 points (4-of-4 FT) and three assists.  Charles Wingate nabbed a career-best eight steals and poured in nine points while Perry swatted away a personal-best five shots.  

Kachelries finished with 15 points (7-of-11 FG), eight rebounds, eight assists and two steals to pace DeSales.  Dawson-Amoah chipped in with 14 points (6-of-10 FG, 2-of-3 FT) and five rebounds.  Ben Pratt and Alex House poured in 11 and 10 points, respectively. 

In the end, Old Westbury finished the afternoon shooting 38.1 percent (24-of-63) from the field, 33.3 percent (7-21) from beyond the arc and 76.5 percent (26-of-34) from the free-throw line.  DeSales connected on 40.8 percent (31-of-76) from the field, 24 percent (6-of-25) from three-point territory and 47.1 percent (8-of-17) from the charity stripe.  DeSales held a +13 rebound margin (53-40) while scoring 18 second-chance points off 22 offensive rebounds.  Old Westbury outplayed DeSales in blocks (7-6), steals (15-6), and fastbreak points (40-10) while scoring 16 points off 24 Bulldog turnovers. DeSales held the edge in assists (18-10), bench points (26-10) and points in the paint (50-26).
