Strong play sends @OW_Panthers Softball to York sweep

Old Westbury opens its 14-game home schedule Monday (Mar. 18) with a doubleheader against Lehman College

BELLEROSE, NY --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury softball closed out a four-game road trip Saturday afternoon in Bellerose, New York with 19-3 and 27-0 run-rule victories to sweep a non-conference doubleheader from the York College Cardinals (0-2) from Padavan-Preller Field in Bellerose, New York. The Panthers (2-2) have now won 13 straight versus York dating back to the 2007 campaign.

Game 1 (5 Inn.): Old Westbury 19, York 3
Old Westbury compiled 15 runs off Cardinal starter Dorianny Rojas (L, 0-1: 5 IP, 11 H, 19 R, 18 ER, 19 BB, 5 K) in the opening inning as 21 batters stepped to the plate to produce six hits and 10 walks to put the game away.  Leading 2-0, Jessica Schwartz (4-for-5, 4 RBI, 3 R, 3B) delivered a two-run single to score Johanna Metz (1-for-3, 2 R, 2 BB) for the game-winning run to put Old Westbury ahead by four. Samantha Arcese (2-for-3, 5 RBI, 2 R) and Schwartz both stroked two-run triples later in the inning to extend Old Westbury's advantage to 14.

Arcese slapped a two-run double in the third to make it a 17-0  game while Jennifer Lobody (1-for-2, R, 3 BB) worked a bases loaded walk in the fifth inning to advance Schwartz home for Old Westbury's 19th run.

Panther starter Lauren Bloom (W, 1-1: CG, 5 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 2 ER, BB) registered a career-high 10 strikeouts and set the tone by fanning six of eight batters during innings two and three.  She also helped her own cause with three runs scored and a first inning RBI single.

A costly throwing error by Arcese put an end to Bloom's bid for a shutout as Rosenery Chicaiza scored York's initial run in the fifth inning.  Two batters later, Mary Cuevas (2-for-2) doubled home Rojas and then scored on a Nicole Ovelheira (2-for-3) RBI double to settle the 19-3 final.

Game 2 (5 Inn.): Old Westbury 27, York 0
Nicole Baron (2-for-5, 3B, 2B, 5 RBI, 4 R, SB) drew a leadoff walk from Cardinal starter Chicaiza (L, 0-1: 5 IP, 23 H, 27 R, 21 ER, 5 BB, 3K) before stealing second, moving to third on a wild pitch and advancing home on an error to score the game-winning run.  Amelia Cariddi (2-for-5, 2 R) followed with a RBI single to double Old Westbury's advantage before scoring on a Schwartz (4-for-5, 4 RBI, 3 R) RBI single during a three-run first inning.

Bloom (4-for-5, 7 RBI, 2 R, 3B, 2-2B, SB) produced three RBI during a nine-run second inning to build a 12-run lead.

After scoring four runs in the third frame, and six more in the fourth, Isabel Febo's RBI single drove in Bloom as part of Old Westbury's five-run fifth.

Baron (W, 1-1: 5 IP, 1 H, 7 K) retired her first nine-batters faced until allowing a leadoff single to Rojas to start the fourth inning.  She finished with seven strikeouts during her one-hitter on the way to logging her third-career shutout. Baron's five RBI were a career-high while her four runs scored tied a personal-best effort originally set in game one.

Lobody added five runs scored during her three-hit performance that was highlighted by a two-run single in the second inning.

LEHMAN COLLEGE LIGHTNING UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury opens its 14-game home schedule Monday (Mar. 18) with a doubleheader against the Lehman College Lightning (1-5) starting at 3 p.m. from Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex.  The Panthers enter with a 16-game winning streak against the Lightning since 2008.
