Matthews guides @OW_Panthers Women’s Lacrosse at Neumann

Old Westbury travels to Mahwah, New Jersey next Monday (Apr. 25) to close out its non-conference slate against Ramapo College

ASTON, PA --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury women's lacrosse continued their five-game road trip Thursday afternoon in Aston, Pennsylvania and were unable to keep pace with the Neumann University Knights (5-3) in a 17-6 non-conference setback from Bruder Field.

The Knights jumped ahead 2:39 in with Reilly Fiedler's first of three goals on the day.  Courtney Petrucelli then doubled Neumann's advantage 34 seconds later with a free-position tally past goalie Tazmeya Allen (1-6) for the 2-0 lead.  Neumann scored seven-unanswered goals, including the game-winning goal coming at the hands of Petrucelli at 9:12. Old Westbury was held without a shot for a stretch of 14:20 until Hope Matthews fed Ryan Burmann for a laser past Knight goalie Catriona Corrigan (5-2) to put the Panthers on the board with 8:03 left in the half.  Fiedler and Kaitlyn Conrad both registered first-half hat tricks with scores in the final 3:15 while Yaritza Caraballo netted her fourth goal of the season with 47 seconds left to slice Old Westbury's deficit to eight (10-2) heading into intermission.

Conrad opened the second-half scoring just 54 seconds in to build Neumann's lead to nine (11-2).  Old Westbury answered with back-to-back goals from Matthews and Alessia Drevnyak to pull within seven at the 25:06 mark.  Neumann went on a five-goal spurt during the next 11:19 to make it a 16-4 game. The Panthers put away two goals by Natasha Treuman and Matthews before the Knights scored with six seconds showing on the clock to settle the 17-6 final.

Allen made 13 saves in defeat for Old Westbury as Corrigan turned away eight shots to secure Neumann's win.

Neumann held the edge in shots (40-15), draw controls (14-10), ground balls (26-19) and caused turnovers (18-9).

Matthews finished with a career-best seven ground balls in addition to three caused turnovers, two draw controls and two goals.  Treuman chipped in with five draw controls and two ground balls.

Conrad led the way with five goals and seven draw controls as Brittany Cassidy controlled a game-high seven draws to pace Neumann.

RAMAPO COLLEGE ROADRUNNER UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury (1-6) remains on the road Monday (Mar. 25) with a non-conference matchup in Mahwah, New Jersey against the Ramapo College Roadrunners (3-1) at 4 p.m. from Athletic Center Turf.  The Panthers, who enter with a 1-5 all-time record versus Ramapo, will look to top the Roadrunners for the first time since 2016.
