Men’s Soccer nets 2-1 win over SUNY Cobleskill

Old Westbury travels Saturday (Sept. 14) for a non-conference battle against Mitchell College

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury men's soccer captured a 2-1 non-conference win Wednesday afternoon over the visiting SUNY Cobleskill Fighting Tigers (2-2-1) from Panther Park.  Prior to kickoff, a moment of silence was held in remembrance of the fallen of September 11th.

Old Westbury (2-2-0) broke the scoring ice in the 32nd minute as Justin Vij's throw-in found the right boot of Michael Gilligan, who then used a one-touch pass to Grixon Moreira to put away his third goal of the season.  Adama Diop (38th minute) and Kalifala Konneh (44th minute) took the Fighting Tigers' last two attempts of the half before John Gergen (0-1-0) swatted away Cristian Garay's shot and sent the 1-0 game into intermission.

Mame Amar slipped the ball past two Panther defenders into the box for Chris Gardener to net home the equalizer (1-1) in the 47th minute.  The game was settled in the 65th minute when Jonathan Hernandez used a heel flick to get the ball to Gilligan, who then beat Gergen to score his first-career game-winning goal.

Panther goalie James Perciballi (2-2-0) made three saves to secure the victory while Gergen stopped three shots in defeat for Cobleskill.

At the end of 90 minutes, Old Westbury held the advantage in shots (12-8), shots on target (5-4) and Cobleskill held the edge in corner kicks (5-1).
