OLD WESTBURY, NY – The SUNY Old Westbury women's basketball team claimed their first victory of the season, defeating York College by a final score of 75-42.
The Panthers had a dominant game from start to finish and ended the day with a strong team win. The Panthers had many standout performances today.
The team got off to a strong start and maintained their lead throughout the game. They then pulled away as the fourth quarter progressed as they outscored York by 17 points.
Phalan Smith continued to be a force for the Panther's offense. Smith ended the game with 30 points as well as six rebounds, and five assists. Smith also had a dominant game defensively with one block and three steals. At the end of the day Smith finished with a plus/minus of 30 and was an all-around standout performer.
Fatima Thompson had her best game of the season, putting up a double-double. Thompson played well throughout the entire game playing a team high, 35 minutes. In the statistics column, Thompson had 19 points, 13 rebounds (eight of which were on the offensive side), two assists, two blocks, and two steals.
As a group, the team shot the ball significantly better than in both previous games. The team shot the ball 41 percent from the floor. Additionally, the Panthers moved the ball effectively, recording 21 total assists.
The Panthers played physical basketball, imposing their will in the paint, amassing 52 points down low and 25 points off of turnovers.
Despite their efforts, the Cardinals had a standout showing from their starting guard, Alicia Gumbs. She recorded a game-high 32 points as well as three rebounds, two assists, and a steal.
The Cardinals struggled to shoot the ball and could not convert on a three-point attempt. They shot the ball 34 percent from the field.
The Panthers came together in a physical and well fought game to claim their first victory of the 2023-24 campaign. The team will reset as they prepare to host City College of New York in the Clark Center Gymnasium. The game will take place on Tuesday, November 21 at 5pm.
